Here's what I know about fiber internet

-it's fast

-I want it

-...

Ok, I've got some questions and I'm wondering if you guys can educate me

-How far does the fiber go? (do they bring fiber into the house and lease you a fiber modem? Where does the fiber turn to copper)

-Do you need a special router to take advantage of speeds greater than 100 Mb/s?

I think it depends on the service, Cisco makes add on card for their routers to accept fiber

fiber can run 2km on a single run, I think with Verizon fios they bring the fiber into your house then add what looks like their own dmark some where and it terminates into copper.

Cat 5e can deliver gigbit so a standard router should work just fine

It depends on your IPS some may not lend u a modem and some may also you will not get full 1GBPS speed to a single PC or device if you use wireless it will be way slower then 1GBPS and you need special cables to obtain full speed.

Fibre can travel for ages, there is hardly any signal loss!  Its just light which is the amazing thing.  Totally passive until the exchange and termination point.

When you get Fibre, most likely FTTH, fibre to the home, you will have something on your wall called an ONT.  Think of your Optical Network Terminal as if it were a modem.  You can proceed to connect your ONT to your router.  You don't need a specific router to use FTTH.

Here are some good links to describe a FTTH install.

Australia is getting FTTH at the moment but the project will probably be changed to a FTTN system, when the new government most likely gets voted in in September. Anyway, you need a gigabit switch to get anything over 100Mbps, and a pretty strong wireless router to get speeds like that over WiFi.
