My HDR doesn't work

I've got a new monitor (VG27AQ1A) and when I enabled HDR it looks so pale.

I've plugged DP 

specs:

RTX 3070S

I5 14600kf

Need HDR enabled on monitor and Windows for HDR content. But that monitor is not really HDR it just supports signal for it and just doesn't look good in that mode.

You need at least Vesa DisplayHDR600 or above (best for DisplayHDR 1000), or straight go for any OLED type display.

Its a 1000:1 edge lit display, I don't think enabling HDR will be worth it anyways.

 

There's an HDR calibration app you're supposed to run, but I doubt you'll be able to change the washed out nature. HDR requires high contrast to look good, otherwise, there's simply not enough backlight complexity to properly run HDR.

 

Only non OLED display I've dealt with so far that could actually run HDR is my Samsung Neo G8, being a QLED VA panel with a 1M:1 contrast ratio.

The main reason for it looking "pale" in HDR is because while in HDR, Windows maps SDR content to the sRGB color space. The monitor you are using  has a wider color color space than sRGB (advertised as 130% sRGB), so it's likely over-saturating a lot of SDR content by default while in SDR. This gives a really vibrant and punchy look, but it's technically more vibrant than it should be. Once you enable HDR in Windows, all of the SDR content (desktop, web browser, apps,etc.) gets tone-mapped back to the sRGB color space, making it look dull or pale by comparison.

I'm not exactly sure how Windows calculates the tone-mapping. I'm not sure if it looks at the reported colorimetry in the monitor's EDID, or if it just assumes the display's primaries are P3 or BT.2020 or something. I still need to research further into that.

And as other's have said, the monitor doesn't have very good HDR hardware, so even HDR content won't look as vibrant or punchy as it's intended to look.
