Hi All first time posting here :D

So just as the title says I have some annoying problems, 3 to be specific.

Problem 1. My First problem is by far the most annoying. After a random amount of time it does not seem to matter what I am doing or have done, my program no matter what it is Google Chrome, a Game, Media Player or even just browsing through my music folder. All of a sudden it will randomly minimize. It all ways minimizes twice one after the other with about a 5-30 second delay.

Problem 2. This I think it might be my SSD or Windows 8 but as I got both at the same time I cannot tell. Randomly again, (this never happens on games) XD everything will lockup but I will still be able to move my mouse and click on things nothing will open apart from file explorer . If I click close on anything it stops responding instantly. I can still brows through folder such as music but it will show that's its empty. I have checked my SSD activity and it nothing for some time around 30 seconds to 2 minutes. After the 30 seconds - 2 minutes it will catch up and for example if I spammed Google Chrome Icon it will load them all up! Also everything which I clicked close will close and it will all go back to normal.

Problem 3. This just started happening. Again Randomly on any program I will get Windows 8 has encountered a problem would you like to send a report to Microsoft. This is again fairly new and has not happened for a while now.

Thanks all sorry I have 3 questions in one thread, me being information greedy XD

If you need any information just ask :D

This seems like a very odd problem. I personally use Windows 8 on an SSD and have loaded it onto a few systems and have never come across this problem. I think the best thing you can do would be to re-install Windows 8 and hope that the problem will fix. Just make sure you backup all of your files and games before doing this.

Computer Specs (The Space Fridge):

CPU: Intel i5 3570k | Motherboard: MSI Z77A G45 | RAM: Kingston Hyper X Blu | SSD: OCZ Agility 3 (60GB) |

HDD: Seagate Barracuda (500GB) | GPU: MSI HD 7950 Fwin Frozr iii | PSU: Corsair CX600 | Case: NZXT Phantom 410 w/ NZXT Blue LED strip

Haha, didn't even know about this.

I just downloaded Classic Start and then treated Windows 8 as 7. Hardly ever even touched the charms menu :P

Do what prolemur says or reinstall from scratch. I haven't had a single problem with Windows 8 so far (with all updates and what not enabled).

For problem #1. There is nothing in Windows 8 as new feature that can minimize all window. So it's not Windows 8.

They are many possibilities onto why it does this:

-> Your keyboard drivers is broken and execute Win+M, or Win+D.

-> You have a problem that for some reason execute that command.

-> You keyboard Win key is broken, and when you type D or M it minimize all windows.

I would uninstall any keyboard/mouse related software/driver and see if that helps. Also, I would check startup programs list and remove program that is related to anything to keyboard/mouse.

For problem #2

Wow, your Windows is soooo screwed. It could be the SSD. What happens if you dont' use Chrome, and use IE... does this problem arises?

I would format and re-install... and keep everything clean (not even Chrome.. just drivers) for a days to see if you have these problems.

You can test your SSD, with HDTune. There is an error check scan.

For problem #3

Your SSD is busted, OR your SATA cable OR you have a SATA controller which Windows doesn't support, as it does special things, and you dind't install the SATA drivers

ok ok ok.. this is what I'll do:

 1- Replace SATA cable

2- Check for error with HDTune, assuming no error, continue:

3- On a different computer, download the EXTRACTED SATA driver from your motherboard manufactrue website (usually refereed as .inf drivers), and put them on a USB flash drive.

 4- Re-install Windows 8

5- In the Windows setup, where you pick which partition you want to install Windows, click on "more options" (or something like that), insert your USB flash drive into a USB 2.0 plug (not 3.0) and click on Load Drivers, and select the location on your USB flash drive. Once installed, resume the setup as normal.

You are missing the Music App, which give you free unlimited music streaming out of 30 million song library (second biggest, right behind iTunes) and growing, for the first 6month and then 10h per month (or make a new hotmail or wtv Microsoft account, and have another 6 month).

You can get the XBox Music Pass, and it will remove the ads in the program, you can download the music (playable only on Microsoft devices) and you can access the music store (download & stream) using the excellent Zune desktop application, if you don't want the Modern UI app. For like 10$ a month or 100$ per year (2 month free). This is cheaper and way better deal than Spotify and other music streaming service, including music library.

Good to hear!

If you want a good start menu for Windows 8 (as many people do not like that it has been removed) startisback is a good option and also very cheap. Logan from RTW recommended this to me and I've been using it ever since. The performance benefits of Windows 8 and the good old start menu we've all grown to love.

  • 2 weeks later...

prolemur, you should read this:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/10/11/reflecting-on-your-comments-on-the-start-screen.aspx

Setup it appropriately, and you'll see how the Start Screen is superior.dss.png

Ya but what's your resolution mine is only 1920x1080. Only fitting 12 in a row without any sections.

I think you mean column. I am on 1920x1200. The screen shot that you see above is an assembled one. I actually need to scroll.

In my case, it cuts right after my "games" group. All my most needed applications are pin on my task bar, so that is why Apps is on the side, where I need to school. I rarely need to access them. And when I do, I usually just use search.

Technically, I can add 1 more row than you, because I have more height on my screen. I have this option:

start_sett.png

Assuming you have the layout that I have: you can perhaps remove a few tiles of "Home" section, and put News items in it.

You probably don't have productivity section like I do. and so now you have 3-4 columns  for games, which you can bring right next to "Home".

Hope this helps.
