Budget (including currency): No limit but the cheaper the better

Country: Luxembourg

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Android Studio, Stable diffusion (Automatic1111), Visual Studio Professional, UE5 , AAA games

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rF8qVW

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me with choosing components to upgrade my PC.
I built it around 2012 following a Toms Hardware guide and since only upgraded the CPU, GPU and added some RAM and Storage.

Some things I have in mind are:

1. Graphics Card
I recently got into AI image generation and want to upgrade to a graphics card with more VRAM and thought about buying a RTX4080 16GB, I'm unsure whether or not there are cheaper/better options, but if so they are welcome!

2. Motherboard

Since my Asus PRIME B350-PLUS is quite old and since I still have my old CPU (AMD Ryzen 5 1600) and GPU (GTX 1070), I thought about upgrading the MoBo in my current PC and to build a second PC with the old one to use as a NAS/host game servers etc. . Preferably with multiple M.2 Slots.

3.CPU

I want to get a faster CPU preferably with more cores too as I'm afraid it'll bottleneck my system down the line. Since I get a new Motherboard I might as well jump platform if it's worth it. So either Intel or AMD.

4.PSU

My current 650W PSU might not suffice anymore if I get a GPU upgrade so some recommendations for a new one would be appreciated.

5.RAM

I don't know if my old RAM sticks are still good speed or not, so maybe I should change those too? Maybe even DDR5 if those are worth it by now.

Sorry if this is asking a lot, I'm an Software Engineer but know pretty much nothing about hardware so any help is appreciated! 🙂

With a BIOS update you can get support for 5000 series Ryzen, so that would be the cheapest choice, then just get more ram if you need it. And then get a RTX gpu of your liking. The faster the better. Most of what you need will be GPU performance after all.

Gaming PC:

CPU: Ryzen 5800X3D | Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 Elite V2 | RAM: Crucial 2x16gb, 3200  JEDEC. | PSU: EVGA SuperNova 750 G3 | Monitor: LG 27GL850-B , Samsung C27HG70 |
GPU: Asus Prime RTX 5070ti OC| Sound: Odac + Fiio E09K | Case: Fractal Design R6 TG Blackout |Storage: Kingston Renegade 2TB and Corsair MP510 960gb | Cooling: CPU: Alphacool ST30 420mm rad, Alphacool CPU and GPU Core LT and Core blocks, D5 pump and res combo

Linux PC:

CPU: Ryzen 7700| Motherboard: Asus A620M-CSM | RAM: Crucial Pro 2x48gb, 5600  JEDEC. | PSU: Corsair CX750 | Monitor: LG 27GL850-B , Samsung C27HG70 |
GPU: MSI Gaming X RTX 3090 | Case: Lian Li Dan Cases A3-mATX black |Storage: SN7100 2TB + Samsung 860 EVO 512gb | Cooling: CPU: Thermalright Peerless Assassin Mini Fan(s): Noctua 1x NF-A14x25 Chromax

Thanks for your recommendation.

I'd still like getting a Motherboard upgrade as my Asus PRIME B350-PLUS is old and I'd like to use it to build a 2nd PC.
Price isn't an issue, I'd prefer the best price/performance ratio while still being pretty high-end rather than just the cheapest option.

I would still go AMD. B550 if you want to save money, B650 if you want AM5 and DDR5

Meh, motherboard is old enough that it might struggle with newer CPU's. Might as well upgrade.

Only think I don't know for recommendations is your workload. In theory Intel has more cores but many aren't full fat cores. Depending on the workload specifically AMD might even take the lead with their "full" status.

As of 30/01/24 AMD has better upgradability, whilst more Intel boards usually have more features that industry specialists might need, not sure if you're one of them.

I am no industry specialist, so I think I'll stick to AMD

I threw together a list of components, but I'm still not sure about DDR5 since I often hear that DDR5 RAM isn't stable... is this old news or does it still apply?

Here's what I came up with:

For a subtotal of 1,790.47€

Now I have some questions remaining:

  1. What wattage does that system need / what PSU should I get?
  2. Is this a good build or is there a serious potential for a bottleneck?
  3. Are all those parts compatible?
  4. Is DDR5 RAM reliable?

Thanks for the help!

The main point for the upgrade is the motherboard for PCIE Gen4 support and the GPU to have more VRAM. Thank you for your suggestion though. 🙂

  1. Wattage scales per needs. I'd say enthusiast should get at most 850W. Get one with a 12prwm cable so you don't have to use a splitter. Get a modular PSU.
  2. It's ok. Won't hold up in rendering, cooking and compiling. Slow RAM. Super GPU's are coming out so non super is already outdated.
  3. Aha
  4. Consumer stuff is always reliable. DDR5 got flack for being unreliable due to loud overclocker minority you can't keep RAM stable to get world's nr. 1 spot. Was the same for DDR4. Of course, there's some validity to paying for something so you wanna use 100% of that thing you just paid for.
