Help with upgrading PSU

I'm looking to upgrade my GPU to an Nvidia RTX 3060 12GB in the near future. Currently I'm running an Intel Core i5 10400f, 16GB of RAM and an Nvidia GTX 1650 with a Corsair CV550 PSU.
Everywhere I check about the 3060's power requirements it suggests more than 600 Watts which would mean I'd have to upgrade my PSU when I do my GPU, yet I also used Cooler Master's PSU calculator and it said I'd only need 330 Watts which seems insane, so I'd rather just ask here before I blow something up.
Thanks in advance for the advice 🙂

The 10400f is a 65w CPU at max load and the 3060 12GB draws a max of 170w under full load.

A 550w PSU is enough for this setup without being dangerous.
Howeeever.. The CV550 is not a particularly good PSU and should be swapped out if possible.

330w from the Cooler Master PSU Calculator is actually quite close to correct.

65w+170w is 235 + 60-80w for the rest of the system. This is under 100% load on all parts of course.

Question is, how much wattage should I aim for? I've been looking at a Corsair CV650 but I don't know if it's enough overhead or if I'm even thinking about it the right way.
Thanks in advance for the advice 🙂

Don't upgrade.

The recommendation assumes unknown components, so they err on conservative.  You only have a 10400, so 550 is more than fine for that system.

Hey! Thanks for your response. I only picked the Corsair out of Linus once mentioning that one should try to keep to components made by manufacturers I know, so when I saw that PSU and "Corsair" it felt safe enough. Why do you say it's not particularly good and maybe could I ask for some recommendations so swap it for?

In the PSU Tierlist its the CV550 is only recommended for systems without a GPU but its not a dangerous PSU to use for the 3060 upgrade.  You can absolutely run it but preferably upgrade if you have the money to do so.

The CV650 is a better option, its not always about wattage but how they are built.

Just remember to swap out all the cables.

Many known companies have terrible PSU's like the Corsair VS with Orange lable and the Gigabyte GP-P750GM +80 gold.. They are both a little bit. ehm.. blowy-uppy 😄

Do you have a budget? And where are you located in the world?

Cool! Thanks for the advice. I do have a bunch of external drives where I keep games and video editing data that I work with, which I remember the Cooler Master calculator also asking about. I guess my point is when do I know when it'll be time to upgrade the PSU? Or if there's a relatively easy way to keep an eye on my wattage beyond those back-of-the-napkin calculations so I can see for myself when I'm reaching the PSU's limit as I keep upgrading my components over time?

Its not always about wattage limits that makes some PSU's dangerous to use. Its how they are built, the components used and how voltage is run through certain cables.

It’s just not a great unit, it’s actually in tier D of the psu tier list on cultists network (only for iGPU builds) so I’d look at something like this for the best bang for your buck (but it’s only tier C) https://pcpartpicker.com/product/RXCFf7/apevia-prestige-1000-w-80-gold-certified-atx-power-supply-atx-pr1000w

Got it. Swap all the cables! We do not want the blowy-uppy lol
I'm located in Colombia, but my budget converted to USD is around some $500 for the entire upgrade (GPU and PSU if needed). The GPU is priced at around $434 where I'm looking at, so the remainder was my PSU budget if the upgrade ended up being necessary. But I can co a little overboard if it means we can keep it from getting all blowy-uppy 😄

Interesting! I'll see if I can find one of those around my area just to be safer

Colombia! Interesting 😮 First person I have met from that country!.

What websites would you use for buying parts?

I would still recommend a lower wattage PSU with better warranty and components than a 'cheapo' 1000w for this build.

But again, its a heck of alot better than the CV550!

Haha, I don't think there's too many of us posting on mostly english speaking forums.
I'm using our equivalent to amazon or ebay, called mercadolibre. Although the place I'm buying the GPU through an actual PC store that just has their digital storefront with the site.

I'll check around tomorrow! Its 3AM here in Norway and I need some sleep^^
Just wondering why at mercadolibre set to Colombia does eveything seem so darn expensive! Is that just the life in Colombia?

No worries! Thanks a lot for helping me out here 😄
The conversion rate from Pesos to USD is not particularly favorable for us, but maybe it could somehow be factoring in shipment too?
