I have a large collection of Blurays and DVDs I want to rip to digital for streaming from a home server so i don't have to go find the disc every time i want to watch a movie. My question is how do i go about this? What kind of disc reader do i need and what software? The options seem overwhelming and vie seen conflicting advice. I'm pretty new to doing a home server thing and don't want to invest in something i didn't know wont work or otherwise be too much trouble for a noob like me. I'm pretty knowledgeable in PC stuff but servers, networking and things outside the plain desktop experience are outside my scope of knowledge. Any help is appreciated.

I use MakeMKV, and for my Blu-ray drive, I use an LG WH16NS60. You also have to install a firmware pack to make it work.

What kind of build do you have?

My next build which ill be doing in a couple months will be an R7 7800x3d with an RX 7900xtx inside a lian li lancool 216

You could use one of these, and just use it externally:

I've tried one of those with a Blu-ray drive years ago and I couldn't get MakeMKV to rip with it. Stick to purpose-made external optical enclosures would be my advice.

You taught me something new. Didn't even realize they existed, but I guess it's not too surprising that they do. They are certainly a much more elegant solution than what I suggested, and the drive would be protected.

It would probably be easier to look at USB drives you are considering, and check the Libredrive firmware list.

Last post here on this MakeMKV thread sticky.

I used this tool to flash my drives, you may also find it useful:

SDFTool Flasher

Note that is obviously not the only way to flash drive firmware, but it worked for me, and was pretty straight forward. Also NOTE it is possible to brick drives, even if unlikely. So read the warnings, and cautions about your particular drive. Some have special instructions about flashing firmware. (Mine for example start with encrypted firmware so they have special steps, that program pretty much handles it)

@sharpdressedman423

I suggest handbrake for ripping movies.  It works on Windows Mac Linux and has lots of options to use, so you can make sure the framerate it what it should be (23.97 fps for most movies) so you don't have 3:2 frame pulldown.  This can be useful if your monitor supports either 120 Hz progressive, or 24 Hz mode as well.  This way, the frame timing actually matches what it should be instead of being output at 60 Hz.  I think it would be cool if old dvd players output at 72 Hz instead of 60 Hz, but basically nobody cares.

Also, using VLC in fullscreen mode, instead of windowed mode with 1x scale (small rectagular area of the dvd resolution 480p) will add a noticable blurring effect, and it's a bit complicated to disable that.  So if you use vlc and wonder why things are smudged looking in fullscreen, now you know, it's not the dvd, it's vlc with some Windows GDI setting.  I tried to make an account on vlc forums about it, but I never got the verification email, so I can't make I post about this issue.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.
