NVMe is an SSD.  Do you mean SATA?

 

Short answer:  Any.  Tho there are better ways to store long term.

Most Samsung SSDs are quite durable. But not the most durable solutions for long term like @Dedayog said.

SLC or MLC. I'd stay away from the large TLC or QLC type SSDs for anything long term.

 

Depending on how much we're talking about, getting a set of MLC 1TB would be best in my opinion. Otherwise, I don't see a reason to not use a 3.5" HDD for this. Shelf life for the data is ~10 years either way and SSDs have similar shock resistance ratings to HDDs. HDDs just being more sensitive if they're operating due to moving parts and such.

 

But ultimately, you could simply duplicate it across 3-4 drives and probably be fine with TLC or QLC type SSDs.

Well actually, NVMe is a storage protocol, since AHCI PCIe 3.0 4x M.2 SSDs do exist.

SATA is a protocol as well.  Both are used on SSD's.  

 

If you have SATA SSDs and NVMe SSDs, you can't say SSD and NVMe.   No? 

 

If folks want to change the way things are referred to,  I guess.

Either way, optical discs are probably the best long term storage media.

SATA being equivalent to PCIe which is the interface and transportation protocol, even when talking M.2 SSDs, there's SATA and PCIe versions. AHCI and NVMe being associated with how data is stored and accessed than how its transported.

 

I haven't benchmarked my AHCI SM951 PCIe 3.0 4x 500GB M.2 SSD in probably 6 years, but even when NVMe equivalents came out, the IOPs advantage of NVMe didn't show yet. I imagine that's not the case with mid-high tier PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSDs since the controllers and NAND have advanced a lot since NVMe came out.

 

I'm probably in the fringe of individuals who had to float upgrading to NVMe, having that SM951 way back in 2015 (still in my 4790k system I occasionally still use, actually with me right now). I imagine this discussion being in the fringe even 6 years ago with how uncommon AHCI PCIe M.2 drives were.

Mostly cost, you have to go into the fringe in order to find SLC or MLC drives, usually enterprise stuff like SAS drives. Where the recommendation of simply using a set of HDDs is enough if your storage requirements are high. Otherwise, you could always replicate across several TLC or QLC consumer SSDs.

 

Personally, for 2.5" SSDs, I've been buying a lot of the WD Red SATA SSDs. Upgraded a few servers with a RAID1 configuration of those drives since they're relatively inexpensive and designed for heavy use or long term storage. Not that there's anything particularly special other than how the firmware on the controller works, just a bit more peace of mind in my opinion than something like an 870 Evo in that role.

Intel optane with 3d xpoint would probably be better long term than any nand based ssd would. To bad it's being discontinued.

You can buy a 905p for reasonable price, 280$ for 960GB, and 400$ for 1.5TB

That's reasonable?  For long term storage?  if you need that much room, you need to look at real storage solutions.

It’s reasonable for SLC 3D xpoint memory. I paid just little less for my MLC SSD.

as for long term storage, I'm waiting for reply to my questions…
