I'm trying to upgrade the PSU on a Dell XPS 8940.  I know that I really need to start from scratch, but I don't have the budget.  I'm trying to keep the mobo/CPU, and upgrade other parts around it first.  Maybe next year I can properly replace mobo/CPU.

For now, I need to make a Corsair RM750x work with this Dell motherboard.  The Dell pins for power don't match any of the cables that came with the PSU.  Does anyone have a suggestion on where I can get adapters or custom cables.  I can't even find a proper name for the Dell connectors.

Thanks,

Labmaster

Luckily enough, someone on Dell's own forums asked this same question. 🙂 There are some caveats as noted in the thread, so you'll definitely want to give it a read.

Looks like the 2x 4-pin connectors are likely just 4-pin EPS power connections, but you'll need an adapter to go from 24-pin motherboard power to Dell's proprietary 6-pin power connection.

Pinouts and connectors for Dell crap boards are completely non standard

Unless you have a degree in electricity, don't try anything, get a new board 😛

This one has a model that explicitly lists the 8940

Thanks.  I read all of these posts and took a look at this adapter.  I'm not confident in this product, and I feel like I still need another solution.

I have just enough Christmas money to go get a mid-range board and CPU with Boxing Day sale.

The Dell was supposed to be the school computer that could play some games, and it did an OK job for a couple of years.  It sucks that the whole system has to be replaced in order to upgrade PSU and GPU.
