Hi, Hope some one can help me (i watch you guys on youtube all the time and figured if you dont know then Im going to give up!)  I have a cable modem that is connected to a UDMPro. That is connected to a managed 24port switch which then feeds the rest of the house via Cat5e. Some of these then have unmanaged Netgear 5 and 8 port switches in seperate rooms which have games consoles, tv's and various devices like Roku's and laptops etc.

The UDMPro also runs 4 access points around the house to give us decent wifi (Thanky unifi!!)

The Cable modem and UDMPro, and the managed switch are all in a rack together in one room and we are looking at getting a second ISP installed as a failover or maybe load balance as the UDM Pro can do this. (plus i am  a big kid and just want to show off I have two 1gb connections, one fibre and one on cable)

Problem I have is they will need to install this new fibre ONT in another part of the house and my instant reaction was "oh crap i need to run a Cat5e from the other end of the house to the UDMPro (NIGHTMARE!!!).

Is there a way i can "route" the WAN from this new ONT using the existing infrastructure by maybe using vlan or port forwarding or some other way via managed switches? or will I have to just bite the bullet and have to run a whole separate cat5e?

thanks in advance for any advise or help! 🙂

Yes you can, there is a technique called VLAN tagging here are the steps for it.

  1. Connect the new ONT to one of the ports on the managed switch.
  2. Create a new VLAN on the managed switch and assign the port connected to the new ONT to this VLAN.
  3. Configure the UDMPro to recognize this new VLAN and use it as the WAN interface.
  4. Configure the new ONT to use the same VLAN ID as the one created on the managed switch.

After that, you should be able to route the WAN from the new ONT using the existing infrastructure and you won't have to worry about running a separate Cat5e.

Have you tried turning it off and on again? Maybe Restart it?
