Surface pro8 GPU possibilitys

Hi all I have a surface pro 8 i5 8GB ram. 

 

It ticks all the boxes for what I use it for but I would like to do some light gaming with it nothing major. I love playing banished or other city / town building games.

It handles it fine for the most part but once I get higher populations or a bit further along in game the ram usage goes through the roof. 

 

My question is, has anyone had experience with using an External GPU with it having thunderbolt 4, and noticed that the ram usage decreased. From what I can see almost 4GB of ram is taken up by the Intel iris graphics. I just wasn't sure if it's worth setting up an external GPU to try lighten the load on the ram to make those games more playable. I don't care about high FPS or detailed graphics I just want to be able to play without it lagging or bogging down.
