I am currently running a PC with a 2070Super, i9 9900k, and 32GB RAM.

My current monitor is:

Acer 27in 1440p 75hz

I am looking at potentially purchasing a:

Sceptre 32in 4k 70hz

For gaming, which is better? Why? I should be able to run 4k on a 2070S and the difference in hz is only 5 - is it that big of a difference?

Edit: I only play non-competitive. Modded and Vanilla Minecraft, Old School RuneScape (PvM), and I do like to occasionally play newer AAAs.

No you'll not really be able to notice this, that much.

I would not go for 4k with your GPU, unless you really want a bigger screen. Minecraft is probably goona run fine, unless you want to run it with RTX. But you also won't see a difference in both runescape and minecraft. It will be difficult to run newer AAA games. 4K is a lot more demanding than 1440p and your GPU isn't really up to that. You can still try and with DLSS, you will probably have some success though.

So to summarize, I wouldn't upgrade to 4k unless there are other reasons besides the resolution. A bigger screen, better HDR or something along those lines would be a reason.

So what I'm hearing is, don't record while playing games that aren't Minecraft or OSRS in 4k. I mean, bigger screen is nice and it does have other uses (4k video watching etc). I don't necessarily need 4k Ultra for current modern AAAs, I don't even own them (I want Starfield pretty bad). If I can play 4k in medium-high I'm happy. If I absolutely have to drop it to 1440p on some games, I'll live. I guess 2070S is starting to show it's age o.o

I mean, I only have 650W power supply so... I could really use an upgraded one and eventually upgrade my gfx card. The monitor in question is $250 so it's a killer deal.

I doubt you would even see much difference btween 1440p video and 4k. Unless your new monitor has a brighter backlight or some local dimming, I doubt you'll be able to discern the difference. If your old one looks very sad and you've confirmed that the new one actually looks better, go for it.

Small tip, since you are new to the forum. If you quote something I've said, I'll get a notification. Otherwise I won't see it.

Edit: a good place to find popular monitor tests, is Rtings.com

Thank you for your advice. I truly appreciate it. I created my account in 2020 and rarely use it, even though this site is very handy for good techy questions. I am actually checking out some stuff right now, potential future upgrades. Was surprised to see 4060 is barely better than 2070S... but I did see 4070 is pretty good.

In terms of performance / dollar the AMD cards are actually better currently. At least in rasterization. If you still want to go with Nvidia, that is fine. But I'd strongly encourage you to skip this generation, if you have the ability to do so.

Games constantly require more and more VRAM, and nvidia is kinda starving their cards in that respect currently. Everyone was already very doubtful of the longevity of the RTX 3080.

Your GPU RTX 2007 is way too weak to handle new AAA title in 4K.
