Budget (including currency): $1,000-$1,500 CAD

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming (Rust, GTA, Sports games), possibly streaming?

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I am gad damn clueless. I want to get away from console gaming but learning about PC gaming is pretty intimidating. I've read so much, watched so many videos, and it feels like I get more clueless every time I deep dive. I'm skeptical of any PC building company, they seem to all get pretty sketchy reputations almost immediately? So I'm posting here hoping people can help.

This was the attempt I've made on PC Part Picker but I honestly don't know if it makes any sense
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CvCgL9
Especially graphics cards because they seem to all be impossible to get your hands on and the most divisive part of every PC.

Any help would be much appreciated

@lazyp your build is showing up in US dollars.  Try this and keep your resolution at 1080P.  That 120mm fan goes inside the back of that case for a rear exhaust fan.

You probably don't need to buy a Windows license for full price, @lazyp, as you can get one from a 3rd party for probably cheaper. Also, what resolution would you be playing at i.e 1440p, 144hz. I would personally go with a 144hz display considering you have a 4070 in your list.

That's actually fine and I'd argue it's a better list than the other person who commented suggested. With the 12600K the Hyper 212 is not good enough for cooling so I'd suggest stepping up to a Noctua NHU14S. They're very easy to install and great quality. Try to avoid water cooling to reduce headaches your first time around.

Also your prices here are in US dollars not canadian. You want the canadian pcpartpicker. Honestly I'd suggest that you just go to your nearest canada computers store to buy the parts their prices are competitive. If you aren't near one go on amazon but make sure to buy only "ships from/sold by amazon" stuff. With your budget in CDN $ you're going to have to come down a bit like was suggested by another user, namely probably cutting your GPU down to a 4060, which is still plenty fine for 1080P gaming.

Don't forget to budget for a 144Hz monitor. It makes all the difference in the world. You can get a decent one for $200-250 Canadian for a 24 or 27 inch. Amazon is your best bet for monitor shopping I've bought several from them. You might also find monitor deals at best buy or Canada Computers or Staples but with less selection than Amazon. Just make sure what you buy is 1080P 144Hz (or higher Hz)

The OP's build comes in at $2000 Canadian dollars.  Look at the OP's budget and then let that sink in.

With adjustments to graphics card and cooler, it's still over that $1500 a little bit... but what doesn't come in over budget these days?

You want 32GB of RAM for a new build these days, no need for a 980 Pro, look for a dual tower cpu cooler, and add a 120mm exhaust fan to that case so it doesn't become a hotbox.  btw there's less expensive 750W psu's such as that Corsair.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i5-12600K 3.7 GHz 10-Core Processor  ($239.99 @ Memory Express)
CPU Cooler: *Deepcool AK620 68.99 CFM CPU Cooler  ($64.98 @ Amazon Canada)
Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING B760-PLUS WIFI D4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard  ($239.99 @ Amazon Canada)

If I continue stretching the budget a little bit, would it change anything else if I were to upgrade that CPU to:

Intel Core i5-12600K 3.7 GHz 10-Core Processor

So this:

Something that stuck in my head during one of the LTT videos was that you should aim to have "more cores" than the current gen of consoles, which atm have 8. I do understand there's a very good chance I totally misunderstood what he was saying!

That's a fine build but get a better CPU cooler. It doesn't have to be $$$ something like a Thermalright Peerless Assassin would be fine.
