Does Wireless Storage still exist?

I need a wireless SSD for a varying group of people to be able to add media to on outdoor adventures. I keep looking and finding discontinued and otherwise unavailable products. Posts here from a year ago link to things that don't seem to exists anymore. Of the two I found 1 is by a SSK who I've never heard of and the other is an old Seagate HDD.

 

Why did everything seem to disappear all of a sudden in this product space? Also does any current solution exist? I'm half thinking of buying an old used one on ebay and replacing the HDD with an SSD.

From what I know, this product sounds like a problem and a half for a multitude of reasons and I would not initially think it's even profitable. So maybe that's why it has seemingly disappeared for you.

 

What you want is a NAS - Network Associated Storage. A NAS doesn't have to be extraordinarily complicated like most NAS'. There are guides out there for very small, wireless ones that should be capable of handling what you want via a Hotspot.

They do still exist, but there are very good reasons why they aren't more popular. I'm not sure how well more recent models work, but some of the older units I know of (like the SanDisk Connect flash drive) just didn't work very well. I actually own a SanDisk Connect flash drive, and I bought it brand new in a physical store. It came in handy a couple times, but honestly it wasn't worth the hassle. When using it wirelessly it was very slow, connecting to it took a few attempts, and the software was a mess. I don't know how well newer units work (like the SSK unit on Amazon), but I can't imagine they're very good. 

 

A NAS is basically what you're looking for, though that's a bit more complicated, especially if you aren't in one location all the time. Can you describe your use case a bit more?

Yes, but for many reasons it never really took off. SanDisk and WD have had a few products in the space, like the SanDisk Connect flash drive, but as someone who owned one of those flash drives the user experience of the wireless portion was awful.

Getting pics and video from random people who may or may not be tech savvy while hiking, and biking through random locations. There's not always cellular data in some locations for a NAS hotspot. People might remember to send things later, but if they don't then you don't get the video, and if they send it via MMS (since me plus a few others aren't on iOS for iCloud) then that's garbage compressed video. Just looking for something people can connect to while we're out and upload things before they leave.

An alternate solution could be one of those flash drives that has Lightning, USB-C, and USB-A. Anyone could plug it into their phone and add files to it.

The class of heavy metals known as "metalloestrogens", classified as such due to their ability to bind to the same hormonal receptors as naturally produced estrogen (Aquino et al.), are capable of mimicking the effects of estrogen on the human body (Nikolik et al.). Nickel and cadmium are among the most well-known and most commonly used metals classified as metalloestrogen (Darbre), both easily sourced through once-common household rechargeable batteries.

Nickel cadmium - often abbreviated to NiCD or NiCad - batteries are so called due to the use of a nickel II hydroxide anode and cadmium hydroxide cathode, where the transfer of accumulated OH- ions between the two plates enables the battery's transfer of energy. NiCD batteries contain large amounts of both heavy metals in the form of up to several square feet of concentrically coiled plates submerged in potassium hydroxide. Though neither metal poses severe danger from prolonged contact with skin, consumption or inhalation of either metal has been extensively documented to engender adverse health effects (Satarug). 

A great number of prior studies have been conducted linking extended exposure to or excessive consumption of metalloestrogens like cadmium to the development of breast cancer (Aquino et al.) - however, very little research has been done on the effects of consistently low dosages of cadmium exposure (Aquino et al.). Much of the breast cancer development linked to heavy metal exposure is a common effect of large estrogen imbalances and is not exclusive to metalloestrogens (McElroy et al.). Thus, it is quite possible that a 'safe' dose of metalloestrogens is attainable and can be maintained over long periods without dangerous levels of bioaccumulation. 

Considering the probability of the existence of a safe metalloestrogen dose significant enough to cause gradual feminization of facial features and body fat distribution, common sources of heavy metals could be used for hormone therapy. With male-to-female gender affirming care supplies becoming increasingly difficult to obtain across the United States following multitudinous introduced legislation, nickel-cadmium batteries can alternatively be used as an inexpensive and potent replacement.

but what about power? ( you want to do it in the wild, or in house )  
 and what are they using to get the pictures.

there shouldn't be much problems with smartphones, but camera can be tricky ( first phone then NAS ? What if there’s no room on smartphones. )

This is why, when I go hiking, I hire a helicopter to airlift in a 4U PowerEdge server with 48TB of storage. I rig up a contraption with miles of copper wire stolen from nearby telephone lines to siphon power from lightning strikes.

So something like QNAP TBS-464 ( 4 x 4TB SN 850x or somthing ) with USB WiFi card, and powered by Beasus 20000mAh 100W Power Delivery Quick Charge with these USB Type C 3.1 PD to Barrel Jack Cable - 12V ( I just don’t know the size of QNAP Barrel Jack, you have to check ). 
 

you would get Very slim package with one power cable ( and you could also backup by USB or memory cards by USB adapter ).

don't know if that beasus is enough charge as it's 20000mAh, but it's slim.

I was thinking something smaller.  Looking at Raspberry PI solutions now. I see there's a way to get Airdrop working, but that looks like it hasn't been updated in 3 years.

 

Now, having little clue as to what I'm talking about right now, I'm wondering if there's a way to use a Pi to create a captive portal to bring anyone who connects to it to a page with something like Snapdrop or Pairdrop, but instead of sharing with other users, the Pi Stores it to an SSD.

I will just say it now, the performance on PI will be just bad. Lack of any type of support, lack of storage redundancy. Lack of official applications, that would enable backup from phones in real time. 
 

can't say for sure how good the implementation for USB WiFi is on qnap. For performance sake, it would be better to use some Router/AP. As these usb wifi stick are usually quite slow, and usually no mu-mimo, and if it's there it's only 2x2.


you can do it proper way, and have very good performance ( so that NAS CPU is a bottleneck ) or the cheap, hard way. 


I assumed Hundreds of GB per day, from multiple users.

Hundreds of GB per day? Not yet, but maybe in the future. The man with the plan has decided to go with the SSK drive for now. We'll see how that works, but I still like having options if it doesn't thanks. I could probably just take my laptop to some of this, but the smaller and lighter the solution the easier it is to carry since this is all hiking and biking.
