Looking for a display

Use Case:

Will be used in vertical mode at 100% scaling exclusively for ncmpcpp, running in the foot terminal with typically a good bitmap font made for high resolution displays like Spleen. My Music library is really big and I  like to see as much of it as possible at once ( I love screen real estate, and I don't mind super small looking fonts as long as the font looks super crisp).

 

Requirements:

* Resolution must be at least 5k

* Display must be no bigger than 24inches, especially if it is a 5k display  ( I can barley stand font rendering on my 4k 27inch primary monitor )

* Must be OLED because my terminal background is always #000000 and I can't stand the none perfect black levels on my current ips displays

* Refresh rate does not need to exceed 30hz

 

Currently I use a 1440p display for this use case and there is not enough real estate and the text is not crisp enough to my liking.

 

I know this is a niche use case and this Display probably does not exist, but if for some reason it does, please let me know :).

0 monitor to introduce as no such monitor in the market and I doubt it will ever exist for 5K resolution in 24" and below.

If that 8k monitor, the Dell UltraSharp UP3218K would be OLED and would use displayport 1.4 instead of the 2 displayport 1.2 cables that would be awesome.  I would probably buy it. Like If you are going above 24inches, I personally think you need at least 5k plus for the fonts to look decent. Also 8k at 100% scaling would be amazing!!!!

Yea, I bought the DellUltra Sharp 4K 27". And I kinda regret not getting the LG UltraFine 5K.

I recently got the LG Ultrafine 27UQ850-W which is also a 27inch 4k IPS display. The contrast ratio is like your DellUltra Sharp 4K 27 Display 2000:1 ( not sure that is important ). It is a decent display but still not happy with the resolution.  Like movies, games, things like that look great. But in the terminal where I spend 90% of the time on my computer, I can't stand looking at vector fonts at 12pt size ( that is the size I usually prefer to use because real estate ), good bitmap fonts on the other hand at around the same size 8x16, look much better and I can just about barley stand the rendering of them to use the darn monitor.

They is only 2 model in market using RGB pixel alightment which is 4K in 27" and 32" from LG.

is that not like an issue exclusive to windows? Can't I just set in my nixos config

fonts.fontconfig.subpixel = {

  rgba = "none";

  lcdfilter = "none";

};

and avoid that problem on OLED displays that do not use RGB pixel alightment?

Also does not having RGB pixel alightment on oled displays effect the rendering of bitmap fonts that don't use anti aliasing or hinting or any of that? Or it only effects font rendering of vector fonts.

Let me know because I really don't understand nothing about this stuff.

It impact to Windows font only in any apps. 

 

You will seen the text with edge pixelate and purple fringing. In 27" you already said not crisp, then OLED is not suitable for you, unless you buy the two model from LG which using JOLED panel utilise RGB pixel alightment, or you not using Windows. 

 

From Rtings.com, normally 4K text will scores 9.0/10 but it is only 7.0/10 for OLED.

Maybe this issue then is not a problem on linux operating system that have rgba and lcdfilter set to none?

No idea on Linux, I didn't use Linux.

5K is only available on 27" and bigger, and none of these are OLED.

 

Alternatively on 15" displays and smaller (basically tablets or phones at this point, most of which are OLED).

I'm just confused how you have such high standards that you want a display with specs that don't exist.

How are you surviving right now with all of the displays you've encountered up until this point?

 

The only monitor I can think of would be the Apple Studio Display (27" 5K) which is still IPS but the backlight uniformity is great.

There's also the ViewFinity S9 - 27" 5K IPS.

 

If you're a baller, you can get the Apple Pro Display XDR, but seeing as how you're extremely picky, I imagine the miniLED blooming would be unacceptable.

I really am not very happy with any display I own, they all look kinda blurry to me. It is what it is

I can imagine you being the kind of customer that actually benefits from the 4K OLED options that Dell offers with their laptops.

And probably pairing it with those 13-inch OLED portable monitors.

Honestly if there is decent 13inch 4k displays ( even IPS ), I'll probably get rid of my current 27inch  4k display that I use with my desktop and use that instead. Also I think it would scale real nice, because I complain that everything looks too big at 100% scaling on my 4k 27inch display.
