New PC overheating? 7800X3D + NZXT KRAKEN 280

majorluk

Hi,

so I have just builded my new PC today and got a little worried about the temps? I left the basic thermal paste on the cooler and just installed it.

The temps looks like this on idle (browser + game download atm)

I guess its not ok, right? xD

Thanks for any suggestions!

Correct, even a basic cooler should be able to keep it cooler than that at idle.  What cooler and cpu is this?  It sounds like probably just a bad mount tbh.  If you dont have additional thermal paste it may not be an issue yet either, usually you can just re mount and it will be fine.

why is your CPU at 4.8 GHz if it's at idle?

something seems sus.

Also for checking temps and the like, use HWInfo64, it's more relliable than other apps.

they did say there was a download in the background so its not like the CPU is totally parked rn.  My CPU sits at 4.8 all the time just due to any background process un parking it.

Load temps seem fine. Have you tried measuring actual idle temps by closing apps like CAM? Try using just HWinfo instead.

What motherboard and bios version are you using? There may be a recent bios revision that improves HWinfo reporting.

Im still thinking a bad mount but that also wouldnt explain the expected hot temp under load (for the most part)...

Uhm, well... the screws might be the problem. I have loosen them a bit and seems like temps dropped?

Not sure if those are ok now or should I play with it a bit more?

hard to say for sure but it could have been so tight on either one side or in general that it was warping or off center.  Tighter is not always better for many things involving screws lol.  Thats a more acceptable yet high idle temp.

not even Thats not HWiNFO, thats HWMonitor. HWMonitor is really only good on Intel chipset while HWiNFO is pretty much better on anything. For stock 5800X3D though that sounds about right, its meant to hit the thermal barrier of around 85-90 degrees under load. If you need thing to cool off, turn on PBO2 and undervolt via Curve Optimizer.

Bump

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂
