Hey all,

I am looking to upgrade my current Intel i7-3770 CPU. I am mostly looking for something that would last for as long as possible and still work decently. My workload currently is some office work and light programming, and occasionally some light video editing, but I am hoping for more time to play some games in the future.

I am also looking to upgrade my RAM (from my current 8 GB kit) and my storage (mostly my completely full 120 GB Intel SSD with Windows on it, I also have a 1 TB SSD which now has programs that couldn't fit on the other drive and has ~300 GB data on it), but my main concern now is what CPU to get. When I was trying to do my own research I watched the LTT review of AMD latest gen non-X processors and I really liked the idea of low power draw, would that be suitable for me, since I don't really need the top of the line performance? Cold you help me with some advice please?

Budget (including currency): ~1000€?

Country: Slovenia

Other details:  components of my current setup are:

  • AMD Radeon RX 5600XT graphic card
  • Intel i7-3770 CPU
  • Corsair 8 GB RAM kit
  • some 120 GB Intel 2.5'' SSD
  • Crucial 1 TB 2.5'' SSD
  • HEDY 600W power supply

Something like the following will meet your needs. You will of course have to check local availability and pricing.

Uses the stock CPU cooler, existing 5700 XT GPU, and 1TB 2.5" SSD.

Going to Germany inventory is going to be far more advantageous for you here, the only difference between it and Slovenia post customer service wise is the fact that your RMA will come in mail, not in brick and mortar store. So yeah, no need for adjusting for local availability here.

Reuse your old SSD and GPU. Everything else goes to used market or secondary PC.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I finally had time to go over the options and I came up with this list:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QNtH9c

Since I figured I wouldn't go that much over my initial budget, I figured I would spend a bit more for something that would hopefully last me a bit longer. What are your thoughts, did I go overboard?

Also a few questions: would the air cooler be enough for i9-13900k, should I go with this processor (I really don't want to use either AIO cooler or anything with liquid, since that would require me to also buy a new case)? How do I check the compatibility warnings generated by pcpartpicker, about mounting adapter for the cooler and cooler physical constrainsts/RAM clearance?

What use case justifies the i9 series? I am curious since I have read some other topics on the forum, and it doesn't get recomended very often.

For my use case then the best of the i7 series, 17-13700k? It should also work better with my motherboard and cooler?

I9 use is justified in systems that do significant data processing.

Even an i7 is probably much more than necessary for the usage described in the OP. But it is a more reasonable choice given the desire for extended useful lifetime. It's my opinion that an it is more than sufficient for the use case.

With the current generation of CPU cooling has a significant influence on performance. See https://ncc.noctua.at/coolers/NH-U12S-redux-70/cpu/Intel/LGA 1700 for and idea of how well the NH-U12S Redux will handle various CPU models.
