Is this upgrade worth it, or should I wait? (7th gen 9940x to 13th gen 13700k)

Curious on thoughts about my situation. I'm actually on 7th gen Intel architecture (Skylake-X) with an HEDT CPU 9940x 14-core. I BARELY made the Windows 11 support cut. I'm on a 3070Ti graphics card but got thinking... any new video cards are going to start seriously getting bottlenecked. I have a gaming 4K 144hz monitor, but occasionally keep it at 1440 to reach 144fps at high settings in games I play. I also use Photoshop heavily with large projects and currently have 64GB of 3200 RAM.

I'm definitely upgrading at some point, but am wondering if I'm wasting my time waiting for Arrow Lake. Meteor Lake is all but cancelled for desktop. Would a 13700K destroy what I have? Would that IPC uplift and DDR5 memory give me noticeable boosts across the board without even upgrading the GPU? Also, I'd like to stick to Intel since I need Thunderbolt support and the applications I use favor Intel, FYI.

you would need to buy a complete new system but moving from a CPU that was discontinued in 2008?  to something a year old on DDR5 with much better motherboards that can further increase performance and productivity then I would say it will destroy your present system.

is it worth it is something only you can decide as the budget required is something else.

New CPU new Motherboard New Memory New cooling solution to handle the wild temps New PSU etc.

The 13700k was well reviewed but here is a test system from a review.

Processor: All Intel 13th Generation processors
Motherboard: ASUS Z790 Maximus Hero
BIOS 0604
Memory: 2x 16 GB DDR5-6000
36-36-36-76 2T / Gear 2
Graphics: EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra
Storage: Neo Forza NFP065 1 TB M.2 NVMe SSD
Air Cooling: Noctua NH-U14S
Water Cooling: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420 mm
Thermal Paste: Arctic MX-5
Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 1200 W
Software: Windows 11 Professional 64-bit 21H2
VBS enabled (Windows 11 default)
Drivers: NVIDIA GeForce 516.94 WHQL

Here is the link to the review final page the valuse and conc;usion if you d not want to wade thru 26 pages.

FYI... my CPU is from late 2018.... it's a 9040x (almost same exact chip as 7040x), 14-core / 28 thread, Skylake generation.

EDIT: 9940X was the processor. I made a typo

only 9040x references i find are 10940x and 9040 intel server

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/28002/intel-itanium-processor-9040-18m-cache-1-60-ghz-533-mhz-fsb.html

I now realise you made a typo in the title as your CPU is actually an Intel Core i9 9940x

Is this upgrade worth it, or should I wait? (7th gen 9040x to 13th gen 13700k)

I'll change it!

no worries but the link to the review of the 13700k is still valid. its a good CPU but compared to what you have and the value compared to your available budget is harder to determine. You will be upgrading a lot more than just your CPU.

Id wait for Raptor Lake Refresh then, see whether they are going to be on the rumored LGA1851 or actually on LGA1700 like what the industry is doing releasing brand new model of LGA1700 board during Computex 23. The only guarantee now would be AM5 with another generation assured, but they are not the best in Photoshop.
