Maximum display with display adaptor.

I have a question, and it is serious, your positive answers can save my few Penny.

 

Can I get the same resolution of a "DisplayPort" by using an adaptor for VGA or DVI?

VGA? If you wont mind each frame taking 10 seconds to arrive to the display, then yes. Without any modding, NO.

You won't be able to get to display port levels of resolution and refresh using a DVI as compared to display port. but I think DVI can push 1920 by 1200 at 60hz if i'm not mistaken. That's about the max for it. And as for VGA just forget it haha.

Guess I need to buy a Monitor with DisplayPort output right?

Single link DVI supports up to 1920x1200 @60Hz, Dual link can handle up to 2560x1600 @60Hz. I'm using a dual link port for a monitor at 1920x1080 @120hz Hz. If you want to use a resolution that requires dual link DVI, you would need an active DP-DVI converter which are quite expensive compared to the single link ones.

DisplayPort adapters to VGA and DVI become equivalent output of VGA and Single-Link DVI. Whatever those maximums are, it will be the same if they are from a DisplayPort adapter as it is with just a native connection.

For 1080P HDMI is all you need, DVI-D will work as well.

VGA is the only one you need to avoid.

What can each run @60Hz

1080P HDMI and up.

1440P DVI-D and up (could be 1600P i can't remember)

up to 4K DisplayPort

VGA can only do 800x400 @ 60Hz

As for actual recommendations on displays, first you need to decide what size do you need/want. Also do you want crazy fast response times and refresh rates, or do you want better color and so on.
