Any recommendations for an nvme enclosure? My current laptop is about 3 years old, and I am looking for external storage for games. I want to get an external nvme plus enclosure, because I plan on building a desktop computer several years later.

The Samsung T7 2tb external ssd is $160 on amazon, so I would like the drive and enclosure to be around that price. I will be waiting for amazon prime day sale, so hopefully the drives go down in price.

My laptop only supports 10Gbps for external enclosures, or 1250 megabytes / second.

I don't know where you're from, but AliExpress has some great deals on M.2/NVMe enclosures for about 15-20$. Would recommend using a budget but proper SSD itself from a reputable brand. Just make sure to be on a lookout to make sure the key type is compactible between both.

Can I ask exactly what model of laptop you have? With many newer laptops there are spare NVMe slots and this would be quite an easy upgrade to perform.

If upgrading your laptop isn't an option, I have and use this enclosure from UGreen which does the job pretty well.

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticeably improve performance past 240mm and don't improve at all past 360mm. 9) RTFM.

Are you sure it's $160? I've had one in my cart waiting for prices to drop and it's $117 right now. It's what I'll be picking up soonimage.png.6e58130dee00c20d31ca5b38de19e05c.png

I've heard that hmb does not work inside enclosures, so you need dram, and the crucial p3 does not have dram. Will that be a problem?

I currently have an external seagate hdd, so this is new.

My laptop cannot be upgraded.

I would avoid QLC SSD in a first place.

As if it isn't power up, the controller can’t refresh data, and it could be a problem after few months.
HBM does not work over USB ( as it’s in NVMe 1.2 spec ), but the USB to NVMe bridge in itself already do so much delay,  and performance Lost, that it’s not priority, ( but lack of dram will further hinder the SSD performance ).

do note to get something that have TRIM passthrough support.

Can it be powered from the same data cable, or does it require a separate power adaptor or second cable for it to work?

This wasn't answered by questions on UK or US Amazon listings.

I am shocked that the more expensive Sabrent 10gbps enclosure requires a separate power supply that they don't even shown in pictures.

I'm looking at 2tb Crucial P3 because it is $128 cad. I might be able to get something better for prime day. Any recommendations?

I personally have my eye on the Silicon Power A80 since it has a cache, whereas the P3 does not, but they have similar price at least in the US if you can get the A80. Otherwise, Silicon Power A60 is cheaper than P3 by ~$15 CAD with comparable specs and competitive TBW+warranty: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/products/compare/J6ndnQ,VxfFf7,dBBG3C/

Okay, I don't know what HMB is, but I used my enclosure with a Micron SN370 and a WD SN740 (both of which are 2230 form factor drives that I'm almost certain don't have Dram caches)
