Cool. Ill assume ECC isnt necessary as none of these applications are particularly mission critical.

32GB should be more than enough, bind 8GB to the MC server and the rest for Plex and Archive.

Budget (including currency): 1200€

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Plex like workloads, hosting a Minecraft server, archival storage

Hey guys, a buddy of mine and i are planning to build our first server. As mentioned above we want to use it as a minecraft server, video streaming (plex or similiar) and just plain archival storage. I have a spare GTX1060 6GB as an encoding GPU or if it's necessary a A750. My thinking for a suitable CPU was something like an Epyc 7402P or a 7302P, so basically between 16 and 24 cores, an older Xeon is also an option.

For Ram i would want to go with something along the lines of 96-128GB.

That's the basic parameters i've set so far. I'm not locked into any of this. So if somebody here has experience with building the machine that i described, help is definitely appreciated, especially with the CPU and MOBO choice as i'm not that deep into those.

More than enough.

Minecraft server API is still very single core heavy and you dont need a lot of horsepower for plex transcoding or archival storage. youre less likely to see benefits of massive amount of cores that Epyc offers. Youll be better off served with off the shelves consumer hardware on that front. Do you need this to be rack mounted or just in a standard sized computer case?

I don't have a rack, so basic case mounted would be ideal.
