I would recommend simply using the Start Screen. It's very functional, especially with the features added in W8.1 Update 1. Pin all the stuff you use, set your desktop background to be used in the start screen as well, leave the desktop clean and available for temporary files and watch the magic happen.

I use Start8.  It costs $5 but it is WELL worth it.  It is exactly like the windows 7 menu but you can change way more things.

oo i'm really liking this compared to classic shell! and it doesn't freeze up when i restart my computer, thank you for suggesting it!
