I got a new gpu, and put it on a test setup before I put it in a case or started gaming, and it worked fine. I then proceeded to put the entire assembly into my Montech Air 900 case, and once I hooked everything up, boot the system. All the fans on everything spun, but there was no video at all. I took the new gpu out but kept the old motherboard, CPU, RAM, and HDD in there, and the iGPU had no video either. I took everything out and packaged it back up, contemplating how I could scrape together enough to completely start over building a pc. The next day, I got everything out to test it one more time, and everything was fine. What could have caused this?

Specs (as evidenced by the stupid amount of processor and RAM bottleneck, this is temporary):

Dell Inspiron 3847 motherboard

Intel Core i5-4460

8 GB DDR3 (I think it was either 1333 or 1666 Megahertz)

AsRock Challenger D OC edition RX 6700 XT

I’m eventually hoping for a cheaper AsRock x570 (probably the gaming4 or Phantom), an SSD, 32 GB DDR4-3200, and a Ryzen 7 5700x, so less unbalanced then my test setup for sure.

I’ve heard of RX 6000 GPUs having problems like this, but I think the case might have been related. Was this likely a one-time short that I can fix by inspecting the case more thoroughly, or is it potentially unsafe to put my new system back in it?

I guess check to make sure all the standoffs are where they should be and that you don't have any extra ones making contact with the PCB.  I'm not confident Dell can do anything standard, so that would be where I'd start.

Just googled a picture of that board.  Looks like there's a missing standoff hole where they have the SATA headers.  Did you put in 9 standoffs?

I put 9 standoffs in the case because it had 9 holes marked for ITX, which is what that board is closest to, but I only found 8 holes for standoffs on the board. I might try taking the extra one out to see if that fixes it. I also just noticed an extremely long pin/contact on the board that looks like it might be making contact with the case. Thanks for the help.
