yes you can just buy another set

Hi, I currently have 16gb of DDR4 Ram in my desktop system. I'm wanting to upgrade to 32gb. Can I just buy another matched pair of 16gb (2 x 8 gig sticks) of the same RAM (same manufacturer and model). Or do I have to buy a set of four that are matched?

Thanks for any help.

You can simply buy another set, but the most optimal solution would be a new 2x16GB kit. running 4x8GB is perfectly fine but does add more variables to potential instability. Some people elect for a 4 DIMM setup simply because it looks better, but for pure performance/reliability, there's a slight advantage to a 2 DIMM setup.

Mixing RAM hasn't been a problem since DDR3/ early DDR4, something that's been proven by even LTT I think with a relatively recent video. Though you'd want either the same or better kit to be able to run whatever EXPO/XMP profile your current kit is running.

depend on speed.

General rule of thumb is match the speed and CAS latency.

If you are on Ryzen 3xxx and using XMP you want to keep it 2 sticks at above 3600.
