Budget (including currency): $350

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Forza 5 roblox minecraft fortnight whatever else strikes his fancy

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Mobo: Gigabyte ga-a320m-s2h matx

CPU: AMD R7 2700x

GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070

RAM: 16gb of pc2400 ddr4

PSU: Evga 500w bronze

Storage: 256gb nvme and a 256gb sata ssd

So my 11 year old son has been getting more into PC gaming and wants to upgrade his current setup for his birthday in June. Most hardware flows down in my family and him being the youngest has most of my old gear from years past. Trying to get the best price performance out of this budget while also getting him a new RGB case(ya it's important he currently has whatever full case I had in a closet lol). He doesn't play anything too demanding but has some frame issues in Forza. I'm sorta thinking rtx 6600, 1tb ssd and a new case. I may upgrade my ram to get him my current 16gb 3200 too (that's dad's budget not his lol).

RTX 6600 is a good budget card.

I recommend a 1TB Kingston NV2 NVMe SSD for storage, it's a great value.

Corsair LPX 2x8GB 3200Mhz CL16 kits can be had for about $45. (You might be able to get other kits with same specs cheaper). 3200 CL16 is the current bang for the buck at DDR4.

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticeably improve performance past 240mm and don't improve at all past 360mm. 9) RTFM.

I'd get a 1TB SSD and probably a 6650XT.  The 2700x is good enough for a bit longer, but you can drop in a 5600 if you're giving him your RAM and be done.

I think the 6600 is a great card but not sure how long it'll keep being a great card.

6600, 5600, 1TB ssd, and case will stretch your budget a little but I think it's the best deal for a 1-shot kill.  Otherwise do 1TB + 6650XT+case now, and then CPU/mobo later.?

This was kinda where my mind was at 6600 was the minimum but the xt and 6650 xt seem to get closer to 200 weekly. Figured for him sticking the the 2700 and getting as much gpu for his budget would give him the biggest impact.

It 100% will be by a nice margin, the 1070 is slowly showing its age in some DX12 titles. And if more money comes in later on, a 5600 non X would be a very simple drop in CPU upgrade that wont need anything else in.
