if a 6800xt black edition reference card is loading into windows fine but crashing when launching games with stock settings is this something that can be fixed as a novice or can the card be considered toast? i've seen KrisFix's videos about the batch of reference 6800xt's he tested which one ended up cracking and destroying the gpu die but just wondering if it's even worth attempting to repair or just go for a new card?

Assuming that you bought the card brand new and have a PSU with sufficient wattage to power it, I'll suggest it may be a driver problem. New GPU's running at stock settings don't just crash when launching games, drivers do. Try running the AMD Cleanup Utility  and reinstalling the latest drivers.

actually bought it used a couple weeks ago and was running fine until recently. I only ran stock settings since it provided more than enough performance for my needs but this just started happening and i'm trying to figure out if its a software or hardware issue. i've read about the problems the 6000 reference editions had so i thought i'd ask first before attempting to reinstall drivers or crack it open to repaste and check for any problem areas. Thanks for the info about the drivers!

Used GPU's can come with all sorts of issues as you don't know what its application was and how heavily it was pushed, eg. Crypto Mining. You just have to believe the word of the seller.

But to troubleshoot, try to fix any Windows or AMD Driver issues first before reapplying thermal paste. Have you tried looking at the Windows Event Viewer after a crash to determine how the application crashed? Specifically look at events labelled "Critical" and "Error" under Windows Logs>Application and System.

i haven't yet but i'll try doing a test again to see what comes up. so is it fair to assume that if it is just crashing in games that the card itself could be ok if temps aren't going up that high past 80c? just seems weird that running stock settings would present problems. I dont know if it was mined on or how to even check for that but if it loads into windows fine i have to figure its a driver issue then?

Yes. By the way, what is your PSU?

im using a EVGA G+ 650w gold unit. Its a b tier psu from the cultist list and i did a lot of reading to figure out if i could run it on this or not which many have done so without issues especially on stock settings. I do want to upgrade to a 750w unit though if it turns out that fixes my issue but I'll see if reinstalling the drivers helps anything out first.

Hmm, 650W is probably bare minimum for a 6800xt. AMD themselves recommend a minimum of 750W for this GPU. If you see signs like your system restarting during playing a game then it's definitely your PSU not supplying enough power. But like I said, try ruling out driver issues by following my guidelines above.

so i went ahead and ddu wiped my system a couple of times for good measure and reinstalled the latest 23.3.2 driver to see how it did, so far so good! im still going to run some more benchmarks and keep my eye on its stability but hopefully its smooth sailing from here. thanks for the info!
