building a nas

Budget (including currency): 

hello, I wanted to build a NAS, but I've recently gotten a MSI MPG B560I.

and I was just wondering if the motherboard(the MSI motherboard) would still work as a NAS.

2 SATA slot only, but if your use case wont need a GPU, you can just get an HBA card later on for expansion and hardware RAID functionality.

thank your for the advice for HBA card, I haven't thought about that. Does the HBA card acts a raid functionality or should I get/include something else for that? Also how can I include more SATA slots (if possible)?

The HBA card would add more SATA ports. All 8 of my NAS drives are plugged into my HBA card. 

 

As for the RAID? That depends. Have you decided what OS you are going to run? For example, I'm using TrueNAS, I don't need to setup a RAID array or anything outside of the OS. I just configure everything in TrueNAS, it handles everything with the drives.

I decided to use trueNAS as well. Would I need to configure the storage as raid 0, or how to you recommend configure the raid?

NEVER go for RAID 0 on a NAS build. It is purely a bandwith-focused RAID that would make you lose all your data in the event of a drive failure. For a 2 drive array you really only have 1 choice of going for RAID 1, which is complete mirroring. In the case of 1 drive failure, all the data is completely secured but you are pretty much limited to 1 drive capacity and speed. This is also why i recommend adding in an HBA card to this build, because 4 drive array would give you more options to go either with RAID 5 or the beloved in the trueNAS community, RAID Z2.
