Hey, my pc doesn't output any display when booting the first few times, after cycling power it will boot up but has taken up to 10-15 tries. have tried to troubleshoot it,

1. reset cmos

have not replaced the battery in a while so let me know if this could be the cause.

2. removed gpu

3. removed ram and tried sticks individually

4. replaced thermal paste not long ago so also wondering if it could be the cpu seated poorly (skylake cpu)

5. reinstalled a clean copy of windows

after windows reinstall fans occasionally ramp up to full when power cycling

sytem specs might help?

does the motherboard have onboard graphics ? can you get a disply via motherboard  for example. have you tried using different ports on the GPU

have you more cables ? Diplay port Hdmi etc so you can swap them around to see if it is a cable issue

mobo - Asrock Pro4 H170

gpu - gtx 980ti

cpu - I5 6600k

ram - HyperX Fury DDR4

I believe the issue started a bit after I bought a new dp cable, tried different ports, original dp as well as hdmi, monitor recognises input to flash that there's no signal.

It's difficult to test as the output is inconsistent but it's possible that integrated graphics are more reliable, computer runs for about 30-40 seconds before monitor wakes up

is that 30 or 40 seconds needed whe you plug the monitor in via the integrated graphics.

if yes you need to try and get into the bios and select the integrated graphics for display.

Possibly the bios is telling the system at boot is to use the GPU and if the GPU is at fault and cannot be found it then defaults to integrated.

If you canot get into bios as you see nothing then just unplug the gpu and remove it then start the PC with the integrated graphics and see if it uses the display normally with any issues.

Ask one of your friends locally if they can help you out and try your 980ti in their pc to check if it is working or not.

As for the issue with the cycling and ramping of fans it might be related to the GPU then again it might be elsewhere.

run windows defender under settings select the scan for threats and select the offline scan mode. that will shut down the PC and boot into a scanning mode to make sure you have no virus or malware. It is reasonably quick and takes a few minutes if you have an ssd a little longer with a mechanical drive.

Also the ramping of fans at boot when power cycling s quite normal on many motherboards but it is normally a one time thing then it proceeds with the boot process.

if it is continually cycling then there is something wrong somewhere but first try without the GPU installed.

30-40 seconds for the monitor to detect video output from mobo and when I said cycling power I just meant turning it on and off, did find a virus a while back hence the fresh copy of windows

ill take the gpu and plug it in a different pc,  pc never ramped fans like that before so definitely related to the problem in some way, they did only ramp for a second at a time so not certain if they were the gpu fans or not but right now it seems most likely that the gpu is faulty, still hoping that cmos battery saves the day lol

sounds like a plan. also if the gpu works ok in your friends PC ask if they have HWinfo64 installed.

if they do then run the sensor panel as it will show you the GPU temps the wattage and the utilization. if the temps are too high then maybe time to think about redoing the thermal paste and also replace the thermal pads if you wish to run that GPU for another year or so.

You can also install the HWinfo64 yourself to checlk if you get to the desktop.

Cmos battery is normally good 4-5 years and your MB is from 2016 so a new battery is in order  🙂

Normally though a quick and easy indication of bad cmos battery is the local time and date as that often gets messed up before the PC starts getting too cranky.
