Budget (including currency): 4000$ + Tax and shipping included

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, Video Editing etc.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc) : https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/3xMLQ6

Just wondering if this is the most optimal AMD build. To last for 5 years or so.

Power supply be skimping at 650W for a 7900x and 7900 XT. Minimum recommended for the card is 750W, but 850W is a good sweet spot in 2023.

If you're spending that much already, you mind as well get something like the Seasonic Vertex 850W Gold. Seasonic VERTEX GX-850, 850W 80+ Gold, ATX 3.0 / PCIe 5.0 Compliant Full Modular, Fan Control in Fanless, Silent, and Cooling Mode, for Gaming and High-Performance Systems, 12851GXAFS - Newegg.com

Yes it has 12VHPWR which you can't use, but it also has enough 8pins to run a regular card and has ATX 3.0 standard.

Any particular reason for the 7900x versus even the new 7900x3D? The 7900x3D is a better gaming part, but does take a little tuning in the firmware to take full advantage, and is $40 more. Otherwise I'd skip the 7900x and just buy a 7950x.

Note: the 7900x3D is a 6+6 CCD setup and there's not many benchmarks out for it, but for +$40, its better for gaming by enough to justify it.

Builder/Enthusiast/Overclocker since 2012 with a focus on SFF/ITX since 2014.

7950x is the best production CPU, the 7950x3D is NOT a regular consumer chip and requires a lot of manipulation to take advantage of (speaking from experience last night...) and costs more. It can also run at 105W TDP and get within 90% of the performance or such, I have a production server running one configured as such (7950x).

Comparably, the non x Ryzen 7900 is better value than the 7900x, since it'll cost more and just requires some firmware settings to get right.

What kind of games? How serious is the video editing? Just basic stuff, full editing, 3D?

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂
