CPU overheating on first Boot

Go to solution Solved by Aridaman Gill,

Hi everyone, the Pump was fine.

It is okay to connect it into AIO header on motherboard and so is the commander core to xt.

The main thing that helped with the pump and rgb of the pump was the faulty weak connector (24pin) that connects into commander core.
Due to it being flimsy, i never pushed it completely into the thing. At first when i did it, it felt a bit *crunchy*.

I was about to give up but then i was like, screw it all, and pushed it all the way in.

And to my surprise, it worked!

The rgb is back and so is the temperature control. Now my temp is 22 degree in bios instead of the 84 degree.

Thankyou all for suggestions and help!

Hi,

I am new to forums and PC building.

This is my first PC build and everything is successful i think, the fans light up and i have a display and able to get into BIOS. In there i notice my cpu skyrocketing to temp as high as 78 degrees before i panic and shut it off myself.

I am using an Asus Z590-E motherboard along with a corsair h150i elite capellix AIO water cooler on a 11600k.

The radiator is set up in optimum way on top with pump below it.
On every boot it says CPU fan speed error and Flashes A9 code on motherboard (i think it means bios boot up), which causes my pump and radiator fans to blink red light altogether.
I am using 1 commander core xt and one commander core (came with AIO) for 10 fans in my corsair 5000x PC case.

At first i connected my AIO pump header to the AIO_header on motherboard but then changed it to CPU_fan header as per suggestions on reddit and other places. No change, temperature still rises up continuously and Fan speed error keeps showing before I press F1 to get into BIOS.

*using stock thermal paste that came with the AIO*

Does anyone have any suggestions on what should i do?

Should i use new thermal paste? Also, i dont have isopropyl alc swabs on me rn, any other alternative method for cleaning cpu if its messed up when i take my AIO off?

That error means that your MB thinks that the AIO is not functioning. If you go into the BIOS, are you getting any fan RPM reading?

I haven't used an AIO myself, but some of the repair channels that I've been watching say that you should be able to feel a minor vibration in the pump casing when it's running. Is it running?

I tried touching the pipes and i feel minor vibrations. I think the AIO is working, but the BIOS got no fan reading it just says N/A. Also the temp reached 80 quite fast this time before i just turned the thing off.

I believe your AIO isnt working, I have got this too (i have an AIO) but the temps were fine, I reckon the AIO is faulty. Also what CPU is this?

My First PC
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x
Cooler: Asus TUF Gaming LC240
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B550-f gaming
RAM: 4x8 GB Corsair Vengeance RS (3200 MHz, CL16)
Storage: 1tb Samsung 980 Pro
Graphics Card: Asus Dual RTX 2060 OC
Case: Deepcool Matrexx 50
Power Supply: Corsair RM650x
Headset: Razer Blackshark V2
Keyboard: Corsair K70 Pro Mini (Speed Silver switches)
Mouse: Razer Viper Mini
Only changes I have made is I sold the 2060 for $235 AUD and bought a Powercolor Red Devil 6700 XT for $400 second hand (it was barely used, think I scored a deal on Ebay with that).

I tried to hold the tubes of my AIO and i do feel vibrations and i think water is circulating but those are some minor vibrations.

The thing is i used factory thermal paste that came on AIO and the install was a bit janky but came together.

The cpu is 11th Gen intel i5 11600k.

Other temps seem fine tho but cpu is the one making me panic and not continue to boot up to desktop and install windows.

(temp reached 80 deg this time and a lot more quicker than before)

i fee like the janky install might have something to do with it? I need to buy isopropyl before i take it apart and see what happened, whether it was thermal paste problem or the cooler not making contact with cpu.

Idk how to determine if my AIO is faulty, it got lights on, fans are spinning. there’s minor vibrations in the tubing of the pump. the radiator is top install as recommended by almost everyone.

When I installed my AIO I was very janky too, maybe push down your AIO onto your CPU and see if that makes a difference, it may not be properly mounted. Minor vibrations? When you started your pc for the first time (or gave power to the AIO) did you hear the sound of water or a liquid splashing?

The 15 11th gen  isnt that power hungry either, it only takes around 100 watts at max, theres a problem. It could be something simple like AIO isnt making proper contact or your AIO might be broken. Is the cable for your AIO (not the fans) plugged in to an AIO connecter on your mobo? Or is it plugged into a normal fan connector?

are your fans plugged into a fan hub that controls there speeds?

I will try reseating the pump and or changing the thermal paste.

Minor vibrations in the tubes tell you if the water is circulating i guess, thats what youtube videos told me on how to determine if pump is dead or not.

Splashing sound of water, hmm, thats interesting. i have 10 fans and all of them are running at max i think because they are connected to commander core and xt. I wasnt able to clearly hear a sound like that last night.

those two hubs are powered by sata cables and a usb header that goes into USB2.0 on my motherboard. So i think thats why i am not able to read the fan speed i guess.

ok. I understand if you didnt hear the water splashing, 10 fans must be loud. Is your AIO plugged into your commandor core unit? although that shouldnt be an issue if all of your fans are running at max. Just try pushing down the AIO to make sure that it is properly mounted, you shouldnt be able  to push it down at all.

yeah i have 2 hubs that are controlling all of my 10 fans even the radiator fans. only thing that goes into mother board is a usb from commander core xt.

the commander core xt and core are connected to one another and supplied power by Sata cables from PSU.

I think fan speed control is only possible in corsair iCue software

Also you dont need iso, you dont need to rub of the thermal paste if you take the aio off, its just better to do that.

Personally I'd plug the AIO and its fans into the motherboard, use the fan hub for the rest if you want.  Its just useful to be able to see that the AIO is working within the BIOS and standard sensors.

You mentioned the AIO was plugged into the CPU header, you could try a fan in that and see if it reports that.  There's also no reason not to use the AIO header as usually that can still be speed controlled, you just set it accordingly in the BIOS.

Have you configured the fan controls in the BIOS at all?  Worth checking its set to PWM if the AIO has 4 pins and make sure its not just running it really slow.

Yeah my AIO is plugged into the commander core. the screws are tight and it doesnt push down any further.

I had it plugged before into the AIO header on motherboard before switching it to cpu header. I’ll try going back to the AIO header.

Also one thing i noticed, my AIO header has 3 pins whereas the CPU_fan header and AIO header has 4 on both. After reading the manual i figured that the pin would go in only one certain way and its in one of the GRND pins, i dont think that is the problem is it?

Fan configuration in BIOS, well I cant read any fan rpms but i think i saw a drop option menu where it said PWM, automatic and some other control for either AIO pump or fans.

Sorry for being lost, first time building PC. Thanks for suggestions tho!

I hope the AIO header is in the correct direction. There’s that black head cover thing which ensures theres only one way to insert pins into the board.

the AIO connector only has three pins because it isnt PWM. that header is for the pump in the AIO. that will always be at max speed.
