https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B3MYC337/ref=aod_recs_desktop_prsubs_2 I FOUND THE BEST ONE, def buying this rn

lol it comes with a working, standard ATX power switch

Do I need a pc case, I have $0.13 left in my budget and I'm stuck with an OEM case and no power button. should I use an external power button or go full-on redneck and used no case? i think it could be worth getting a eternal power button but for that imma have to do some sketchy stuff.

What do you mean you would have to go redneck? You can buy generic power switches on Amazon. They even make remote control ones!

The downside of no case means more dust.

Good case, bad case or no case is entirely up to you

Any OEM case will do fine as long as all PC components fits well and adequate cable management.

And it's recommended to have external power button and place it on easy to reach place so that you won't have to reach motherboard every time just to turn on your PC. It's a small price to pay for the ease of turning on your PC.

And a bit out of topic, If you wanna go caseless, just make sure to place PC components in a safe place from ESD (Electrostatic Discharge), humidity and dust.

Which means you will have to keep your room clean, well dusted, and monthly PC dust cleaning.

don't even turn it off...

I broke the power button on my silverstone case and I found a chinese replacement, 3-pack, for $5 on amazon with next day shipping. It might not be as bad as you think. The switch itself might be a standard atx button with a fancy cover.

You might even be able to  route this outside the back of your case through the expansion ports and just do a reach around to turn it on.

I ran my PC for a few months on my desk out of the motherboard box on top of the ESD bag with a hole cut in it for IO. The water cooler was off to the side, the PSU to the other side, and a little fan over the RAM and VRMs to make sure it would get at least some airflow. To turn it on I put some tin foil over the power pins until it turned on. Sometimes there were sparks. The computer is still running like the day I bought it (in a case now though LOL)

The most difficult part is gonna be making sure you get it turned on safely, trust everyone here when they say it's wise to get a button or some other contraption to make it work. It's worth it. Don't use tin foil like me

yeah just tear into it and see what you can figure out about the switch. You didn't really explain why the OEM button/switch is incompatible with your motherboard? Proprietary connectors?

Oh yeah that’s a good point. I have seen Dell motherboards have weird connectors for their power switch on motherboards. If you can figure out what two pins you have to jump to start on the old mobo, you could just splice a power switch connector with those two wires to make the oem switch work.

Even if it’s soldered on to the mobo all you have to do is figure out what two wires (or you’ll get lucky and there’s only two), cut the wire, and add the proper header.

Technically you could just solder the wires to the mobo too, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I'm kinda curious and want to help you figure this out. As @TylerD321 is saying, all you need to do is basically connect two wires together to start your motherboard. What OEM case/computer do you have? Are you trying to replace it with a standard motherboard?

Edit: Photos would be just as useful of course.

Assuming the pin out for the g2 and g4 are the same, you just have to put a header on the two wires that correspond to power switch. You could probably do some fancy stuff to make the drive activity and LED work but that’s up to you.

god damn... HP screwing people over left and right is crazy. That white box in the top right corner houses the LED and switch. You're probably right... it's most likely soldered directly to the board smh

fr i kinda hate companies with propriety parts, and it literally costs them more to make so why not make them the standard/regular parts

Agreed... why invest the time to reinvent the wheel. How many times have they done this.. how many systems.. motherboards... I was totally oblivious to the e-waste these companies generate from these practices. Gamers Nexus really opened my eyes to it and coming across it now and seeing this motherboard and case are basically worthless without each other is disgusting. Guaranteed HP has discontinued this motherboard and/or reconfigured the front IO for g5/g6 etc., and definitely updated the LGA layout for different generation CPUs. You can't use any of it moving forward.

I'm gonna start ranting now, but when I see Alex or Ploof getting super excited for an HP or Dell laptop or equivalent product with nothing but proprietary connections makes me sick to my stomach. These companies shouldn't be promoted on DIY websites. Blood money lol

MAN you got me fired up tonight!

I mean it makes sense from a financial viewpoint but not ethical whatsoever. Typically oems like Dell, hp, etc will be installed in an enterprise setting. Not being able to be fixed by consumer forces them to buy warranty which means more money for the pc company.

i tried to use a regular psu but i needed an adapter and then i found it it also causes the front io to not work anymore, which i found so wierd, why would hp go through the effort of doing that?

Most IT groups don't even handle hardware anymore. They are too busy installing spyware and antivirus and wrecking the registry and making the fans spin at 100% while the computer sits at "idle" bc of cyber security. Why would you even bother with an HP prebuilt if you having an IT group who can build custom PCs that are better in every way? These OEMs handle their own hardware while the devices are under warranty. It's the "second life" that basically has no hope at all. My first custom ATX case from 1994 is still functional and practical today for a second life. HP can't say that for any of their devices.

I vaguely remember helping someone find that adapter. It might have been you lol It's as bad as tesla that keys each component to the car so if the computer doesn't recognize the new door handle, you can't open your door!
