You're better off with getting a whole new rig.

Something like this would absolutely blitz your current rig.

Hi - I built a PC back in 2013 and it has served me well. I would like to upgrade it a bit and am unsure what parts I should replace. I mostly play games, such as MMOs and city builders via Steam. Here are some of the components I have and I would greatly appreciate any advice you (and others here on Reddit community) can suggest. I am fortunate and don't have a specific budget, but at the same time I am not looking to spends $2k plus just to have the latest and greatest. Thanks in advance.

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K CPU @ 3.4GHz
  • GPU: EVGA GTX 1070SC
  • RAM: DDR3 1333MHZ 8 GiGs
  • Motherboard: ASUS Z87-PRO
  • Power Supply: Seasonic SSR-650W 80-plus Gold
  • Boot SSD: 256G Samsung 840Pro
  • Library SSD: 1TB Samsung 860 QVO
  • Extra Hardrive: WD Blue 1TB
  • Monitor: ASUS VG248QE

Easy item is to double ram, but wasn't sure how fast my motherboard can support and if I would benefit from 32 Gigs.

I also don't know if I got a new graphics card, if other parts of the system would slow down performance, etc.

I look forward to seeing suggestions and comments on my old PC. 🙂

I would say that to increase performance you will need a complete platform upgrade but your GPU is probably good enough for now unless you want to upgrade. Here is a basic parts list.

I would go with the 13400 instead of the 13100 but it is $200 more so you might not be able to afford it. The motherboard may not support your cpu without a bios update which I know little about so I would seek more advice, however it is a good low-midrange board albeit last gen. It should still be well within your power supply’s limits so that shouldn’t need to change.

In theory you could keep the PSU, the case, the SSD-s, the HDD, the GPU and the monitor/peripherals.

But I'd advice replacing the PSU too if it's 10 years old, which I doubt, since the GPU is also a lot newer than the CPU/mbo.

If the PSU is about the same age as the 1070, you can keep it, it should still be safe.

A new platform (CPU/MBO/RAM) would draw the max out of the 1070 and a 1070 is still capable of playing at 1080p, and you can upgrade it later together with the monitor.
