Windows 10 set up help

Go to solution Solved by mr cheese,

You'll get a download tool and a license key to use to activate Windows. Windows can be installed using any USB stick and Microsoft's Media Creation Tool. You can install and use Windows just fine without buying that license key, and can purchase a key and activate Windows later to get rid of the pesky "Activate Windows" watermark in the bottom right corner of the screen.

There are more advanced tools to install Windows, but I'm gathering from this post that you're new to this thing, which is okay! Save yourself the confusion and use the Windows Media Creation Tool to put a Windows installer on a USB stick. When you build your computer for the first time and put that USB stick in, it will most likely boot off the USB stick since there's not anything else to boot from, otherwise you can follow steps from your motherboard's manual to boot from the USB stick manually. This is the most common way to install Windows.

So I am buying a new computer and I plan to build it. But I don't want windows 10 yet, so I need to but it asap. I looked around and it looks like its about $140. I planed to but it from Windows them selves because I don't have a dvd drive to use a dvd download.  So I plan to buy this https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/windows-10-home/d76qx4bznwk4?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

If I buy this how would I set it up in a few months on a new pc? Do I get a file or something? Do they send me something? Will I need something to get it to work?

Thanks

To install windows you’ll need to download windows media creation tool and create a usb drive with the Windows ISO file. You can find endless amounts of tutorials on YouTube. Once it’s installed you can go to Activation Settings and enter the Activation key there. Once again, there are thousands of tutorials on YouTube that could explain it far better as it helps to have visuals.

I have just purchased the digital copy of windows 10 home. I have one more question about this message I get after I purchased it.

Let’s get you up and running in just three easy steps:

  1. Make sure you have your product key handy (above) – you may need it later
  2. Select Redeem now
  3. Run the installation tool, which will upgrade this PC to Windows 10 or create installation media so you can install Windows 10 on another PC or Mac.

Do I need to do this now? Will it expire or get a "free upgrade to windows 11" if I don't download it soon enough?

Thanks

Keys do not expire, but can only be used once. And you shouldn't have to worry about them ending the free upgrade for awhile. It may not even be for a year or so
