Hi all!

So I have this old x79 platform with an i7-3820. It's still doing pretty well honestly, paired with a 1660 super, an SSD and 32GB of DDR3, it handles everyday tasks and some games. That said, I've been wondering about upgrade possibilities that could get me from okay to actually decent, in order to squeeze the last drop out of my motherboard.

The CPU being the obvious bottleneck here I'm thinking of upgrading to one of these two

- i7-4930k 6cores and a slightly better single core performance, can be had for about 70€

- Xeon E5 2687w v2 8cores with a significantly better single core performance but costs about 100€

It seems on paper that the Xeon is the obvious choice given that it'll increase both single and multi threaded tasks way better, but I still thought I'd ask for some input. What do you think of all that?

In case anyone is interested, I went for a Xeon E5-1650 v2. Got me 2 extra cores and better single core performance for just 15€. Probably not the most meaningful upgrade but for so little money and effort it's pretty neat! Old Xeons seem to  be quite handy for upgrading old platforms without having to change everything about your system.
