Fractal brand has several different cases with optical bays that seem to have decent airflow: Focus G (I have this) and Pop Air

As for optical drive, I have an LG sp80nb80 external dvd drive + burner - No complaints here. If you are looking for specific speeds or connectors, I use pcpartpicker.com to filter down the models and see prices available in my country.

I had an optical internal drive from ASUS many years ago, and my only complaint was that it had a noisy spin up after being idle for a while, but that might be normal for most internal drives.

I think LG makes consumer DVD and Bluray drives for entertainment systems & TVs too. So they may have more experience than ASUS with optical drives, but I don't know if that translates to more reliable.

many thanks..........perhaps LG is the way to go for external drives...........too bad my current desktop case has no way to mount my 10-yr-old internal optical drive (which i hardly ever used)...........
