HELP - PC Suddenly died and need to build/buy new one (Perfect timing?)

Built my first gaming pc back in Nov 2012 (I still remember all the feelings of excitement and anticipation)

Sadly it has died on it's 10th year 😞

I turned it on, logged in, loaded up firefox, went down for dinner, came back and it was a white screen with "grid lines" and nothing was responsive.

I tried to reboot, reset, system restore, reinstall windows locally and cloud and each time it would just either boot and get stuck on a black screen or it would boot, or lots of red lines on the screen, or go through all the typical windows things like "attempting to restore 56%" etc

Therefore I'm thinking either my mobo is dead or my drive is faulty that's preventing me from even getting into windows itself (could be gpu... but I don't think so?)

Budget: is roughly $2,500.00 Canadian (but prefer to spend only what I need)

Usage: I mainly use it for gaming (used to play lots but haven't really had time lately), I also use it for work from home stuff but nothing heavy just typical emails, excels, vpns etc

For gaming I would say I'm definitely a fan of the Witcher Series, Anno, Civilization, FarCry, Halo and a lot of other smaller indie titles like Hades and Ori

Goal: Hoping to have a machine that'll last the years as I don't foresee another upgrade for a while and that I can still enjoy comfortable 1440p gaming at smooth frames.

I normally just buy whatever is convenient all in one place instead of jumping to 50+ stores to get a deal and I suppose I do live near a Canada Computers.

Here's a list of parts I have currently and maybe I can get some advice on what to salvage or just build a totally new machine (Maybe I can convert the remaining older parts into a home server or something haha)

Any advice would be much appreciated especially with Black Friday Sales on now and the fact that I literally have no PC to use!

These are the parts you could reuse for your new build.

  • Case: Corsair Carbide 500R
  • Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
  • Storage_1: Crucial M4 256GB SSD
  • Storage_2: Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 7200RPM
  • WiFi: Asus PCE-AC88

And of course all the peripherals.

The parts above other than the case should be reused, for the cooler, please ask noctua or find LGA 1700 mounting bracket online. The case doesn't seem to have great air flow and not very spacious.

I personally think, this build will last you a very long time, 13600K is the current gen best value gaming beast, DDR5 for future proofing, great value gen 4 SSD for future proofing, 3080 10GB for 1440p is also future proofing (It's an mid-end 4K card), and lastly high quality 850W PSU.

If you're not sure about the PSU, you could use this list to select another PSU, stick with tier-A.

You could reuse the NH-D14 but would have to get an adapter for LGA 1700 (or AM4 if you go Ryzen) from Noctua.

All but two parts in this list are available from Canada computers. The other two are out of stock there but available from Newegg.

Reuse the HDD and peripherals.

If you used an MS login on your old system, you should be able to migrate the windows license. You will want to upgrade it to Windows 11 as it more properly handles the hybrid cores of the cpu.

Good luck with your new build.  My previous PC just 3 months shy of 10 years. Getting too slow so I didn't wait till the decade mark to replace. Saw a few minor deals and went for it on a budget. Hope you hit a home run with the BF deals.  :D

I don't have much knowledge to impart. But if you wanted to troubleshoot your old GPU at least, I believe you should be able to enable onboard graphics through bios. You may also need to remove the GPU from its slot before the igpu kicks in. If the system loads up okay(just slow), then you've found your culprit.

Hi Duke,

That's a really great suggestion thanks!

Yes I still have my receipts and invoices in email luckily so I'll definitely get in touch with Noctua.

I've been out of the loop for so long but I heard Nvidia is releasing 4080 soon?

I'm not in a big rush to "game" but I do need a PC so would it be advisable to wait and see what the new cards would be priced at and their availability before finally deciding to go with a 3080?

Since that mobo can house multiple M.2 drives should I just buy another one and not reuse my old SSD since they do have "life spans" and mine is 10 years old.

Cheers

probably best to get a new nvme ssd, migrate your data, and use the old one as a scratch drive.

4080 MSRP is at US $1200, idk what would the MSRP be for CAD, maybe $1500, do you think it is worth it? Not counting scalper prices. Performance is a decent uplift from 3080, but also 50% more pricy than 3080 now.

Also, just put anything that is not important on the old SSD, use it till it dies, then replace it. Using the most out of a purchase is something I would do.

I glanced at a few official retailers, zero stock for 4090 but it looks like pricing is around the low $2000s. Guessing the 4080 would be atleast $1600-$1700CAD in local retail when it launches.

Alright so I made the purchase with some changes and I appreciate everyone's help 😄

CPU: Intel Core i5-13600K 3.5 GHz 14-Core Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z690 AORUS ELITE AX ATX LGA1700 DDR5 Motherboard
Memory: Kingston FURY Beast RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL40 Memory
Storage: Kingston NV2 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive
Storage: Kingston NV2 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive
Video Card: Asus ROG STRIX GAMING OC V2 GeForce RTX 3080 10GB LHR 10 GB Video Card
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair RM850 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Total was roughly $2,700 I believe so it wasn't too bad over budget!

Reusing my NH-D14, they're sending me the mount so it should arrive soon 🙂

And also reusing the older drives for additional storage if they don't actually turn out to be dead hahaha

@Dukesilver27- I see that the mobo Gigabyte Z690 GAMING X ATX LGA1700 Motherboard DDR5 has the ability to setup RAID.

Now I've never done a RAID setup before and all I've really heard of in the past was that you should have a RAID controller bought separately depending on the configuration.

Any tips would be amazing

Thanks!
