How can I figure out if my power supply is a type 3 or 4?

And if it is indeed compatible is there specific ports on the psu where I should be plugging the cable in?

The HXi uses Type 3 cables. The only difference between Type 3 and Type 4 is the motherboard 24pin cable, the PCIe cables are interchangeable.

Corsair has a chart on their website which lists cable compatibility between power supplies. It will tell you if it is a type 3/4 cables. Almost all of their power supplies use either type 3 or type 4 cables.

You can use Corsair's 12VHPWR cable with your HX1000i. It plugs in to any of the available 8pin connectors on the PSU.

I am considering getting either a 30 or 40 series gpu soon but have grown concerned with all of the power supply exploding talk.

I have a corsair HX1000i power supply that I bought back in 2017.

And I was considering buying this \/ corsair 12-pin psu cable to go with my new gpu help with cable management.

This cable says it connects to any type 3 or type 4 Corsair power supply but I am unsure what that means and having almost no knowledge about power supplies or their cables am unsure of where to even start. I don't see any type label anywhere in the overview or tech specs on the corsair website and can't seem to find the answer online anywhere.

How can I figure out if my power supply is a type 3 or 4?

And if it is indeed compatible is there specific ports on the psu where I should be plugging the cable in?

I have heard talk of overloading psu rails and I don't want to do anything to risk a fire hazard or hardware damage so I am hesitant to just plug it in randomly and find out. Especially with the extra high power draws on some of these new gpus.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

That chart confused me at first because 4 up from the bottom of the first chart it says "AX Gold only — PCIe (12-pin)" is only compatible with "AX Gold (excludes AX1200)". And that was the only 12-pin I saw but I was unsure if it was the same as the 12VHPWR cable.

Not the same as the 12VHPWR cable. The Corsair AX Gold series power supplies had 2x PCIe (regular 6+2pin variety) cables plug in to a 12 pin connector on the power supply. The AX Gold series is over a decade old.

I just noticed but that is not the new 12VHPWR connector the 40 series cards are using. That's the older 12 pin connector Nvidia used on their founders edition 30 series cards. kinda the same but not really
