Hello!

So I've been running an Opencore Hackintosh on Ryzen for about 2 years and, for the most part, it's been working fine. Recently though, I've run into some issues with internet drop outs and my Adobe applications are sketchy AF, so I'm looking for a more stable solution. I remember watching the "Run macOS on any PC" video from a few years ago and was hoping to get some assistance.

Current build specs are as follows:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (plan to upgrade to either 3800X or 5700X)
  • GPU: R9 380 4GB (plan to upgrade to 5600XT or 6600XT)
  • MoBo: ASRock Phantom Gaming 4
  • SSD: WD Black SN750 1TB
  • HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB (Time machine backup) + Seagate Barracuda 2TB (overspill/mass storage (currently empty))

I managed to get my current system up and running first time, so I'm not a total novice, but I'm looking for an easy-to-follow guide of how to get macOS running in a VM on Linux with support for Adobe apps, Ableton, and other productivity tools.

I am not planning to use this for gaming at all, and I do not want to use the Linux side for anything. Ideally, booting directly into macOS would be ideal, but not essential. My main goal is to get as much performance on the macOS VM as possible while also running stably and to keep all my data from my current system.

A few questions:

  • Do I need a dedicated GPU for each OS?
  • Will hardware acceleration work in macOS?
  • Will I be able to restore my files from my Time Machine backup?
  • Is there a better alternative to what I'm proposing? (I realise it's been a good few years since the LTT video came out, so maybe there's a more stable/easier way???)

I'd really appreciate any guidance or suggestions!

Thanks in advance 😄

I wont be much help virtualizing. Just that you do need a supported gpu patched through for metal acceleration.

But also keep in mind you are on borrowed time x86 macs are on deaths door. If you really use it for proffesional use cases I'm gonna do the unpopular thing and say just gget a mac

Yeah this is what prompted my research into this. Will all hackintosh projects be dead once Apple stop supporting x86 machines? Or will virtualisation still work? Or don't we know yet?

Pretty much. Emulating arm in a vm is basically not possible with acceptable levels of performance. That combined with the hardware encryption device
