Hello LTT Gang,

I want to build me a Truenas Core server on a i3-8100 CPU, and i have some questions:

  • i3-8100 CPU it will be enough?
  • How much NVMe M.2 SSD storage do i need to run Truenas core?
  • It will run Plex, Emby, Jellyfin and it will run in 4K?
  • How much DDR 4 Ram?
  • Do/can I connect the server directly to my Smart TV thru HDMI or LAN cable or both

Thank you everybody for the help😘

As long as you're using QuickSync, sure.

8GB minimum, 128GB recommended. You need a separate drive dedicated to your TrueNAS boot environment, you can't run jails on the drive. Using a SATA SSD drive for boot is more than enough.

As long as you're not transcoding, most hardware can handle this.

I recommend 8GB + 1GB/TB.

LAN only, TrueNAS does not output a graphical interface.

what do i need for transcoding

If you're using Plex, you need to buy Plex Pass to utilize hardware transcoding. An i3-8100 may struggle doing CPU transcoding of 4k content.

can i install truenas core on a 250gb nvme

There are no limitations on what type of storage you can install TrueNAS on. Just keep in mind that regardless the size of the drive, the entire drive will be reserved exclusively to run TrueNAS. You'll need another SSD for your apps.

If you're going to go that route, make sure to buy a GPU listed on https://www.elpamsoft.com/?p=Plex-Hardware-Transcoding. If you and a handful of friends are going to be using the Plex server, QuickSync capabilities from the i3-8100's iGPU is more than enough.

do you know if take the hardware from a Fujitsu Esprimo D738/E94+ can be placed in a normal ATX case? I don't know if the on/off button is soldered on the Mainboard or if the screws holes are ATX format. What do you think?
