good motherboard ?

Go to solution Solved by An0maly_76,

If a 5000-series is in your plans, I would go for a B550. B450 is fine for earlier Ryzen, but my advice is buy the best board for the processor you plan to get, not just the one you need for now. And I personally would not run a 5000-series on a B450. I have an Asus Tuf B550-PLUS, that despite a couple hiccups with the RAM, seems to have done okay so far with my 5900X. If you need a 3.2 heaeder, go for the Tuf B550-PRO. The PRO has one, the PLUS does not.

As to the RAM hiccups, these boards are a bit particular about their RAM. Go over the QVL list for ANY board you buy to avoid potential issues. Mine had random POST failures with no video every 8-12 cold starts. Turned out to be a RAM issue. DIMMs tested fine and machine ran fine otherwise. Installing a different kit of RAM from the board's QVL list solved the problem.

Interestingly, while I don't see why a 1700 on a B550 should be a problem, I was just looking at that board's processor list and I don't see the 1700. You might want to talk to Asus and find out for sure. Sometimes support for older hardware is booted to facilitate support for newer hardware, and it's also possible someone forgot some entries in the list.

BTW... @aryanpallAlso, keep in mind, absence from the QVL list doesn't necessarily mean it WON'T work, there just may be a chance of stability issues, as 100% compatibility can't be guaranteed.

In the event the 1700 won't work on the B550, you might consider the ASRock B450M-HDV. It's cheap, but decent, I used one with a 3600X for a test bed for my other components in troubleshooting my 5900X build. It also supports the 5600(X), but I'm not sure whether its VRMs can handle it.

The 1700 and most any older Ryzen should be fine with a standard AMD Wraith cooler, but I would highly recommend a better one once you upgrade to the 5600 or anything of the sort. 5600X is known to reach 80C easily with a stock Wraith. I run a Scythe Mugen 5 Black Edition on my 5900X, and a Scythe Mugen 5 S on the 3600X. The 5900X peaks around 70C, the 3600X peaks around 60C.
