Hello folks

Just recently whenever I shut down Windows 10 it says...

Closing 1 app and shutting down

To go back and save your work, click Cancel and finish what you need to.

Task Host Window

Task Host is stopping background tasks.

If I just wait and leave it, it goes back to the Windows Pin-entry screen. If I click Shutdown Anyway it does so without any apparent problem.

But I can't work out what is causing this.

I've tried pretty much everything that a Google search suggested: Fast Startup is off. There are no stuck Windows Updates, and I've run the Update Troubleshooter. I've run a Defender Offline Scan. I've done an SFC scan. Nothing has helped.

I notice there are two instances of Taskhostw.exe running. Is that normal? The exe is where it should be in the System 32 folder.

The exe is dated 10/08/22 and I notice I did get a Windows update on that date (KB5016616 and KB5012170) - could that have something to do with it?

Anyway, I guess it's not a biggie, but I'd like to sort it out if I can.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Both are in System32 folder?

According to task manager there are two instances running. If I right click on them and select Open File Location they each point to the same exe in the System32 folder.

So there is just the one exe in System32, but it is, according to task manager, running twice.

If that makes sense!

And during this shutdown screen (closing 1 app), does it shows as well Task Host Window, and System32 location in parenthesis?

No, on the shutdown screen, all it says is what I mentioned in the first post.

It says 'Task Host is stopping background tasks', but doesn't detail any program/task/app or give any location.

Does this seem odd to you?

1. Is this happening even when You just start the system and shutting it right after, doing nothing in OS in the meantime?

2. Did You try to boot into a safe mode? Does the problem still occur?

3. Can You show us what's in your Startup Tab in Task Manager? 🙂

I just tried shutting down after only having the PC up and running for a few minutes, and it shut down without issue - no mention of Task Host.

So, any ideas what could be causing this?

Could it be anything to do with the recent Windows update?

Thanks

Same issues reported here: No resolutions that are proposed have solved my problem with this as well. I have the exact same issue as OP, same screenshot applicable to me as well.

Should I just upgrade to W11 and see if that fixes it? My computer is eligible after a BIOS update I did.

So I'll just say what fixed the issue for me (it started happening immediately following the most recent batch of Winblows 10 updates) was to go into the power plan settings and change from my AMD Ryzen Balanced plan to Balanced (or something else).  Wait a few seconds.  Click ok for good measure if you want.  Change it back to AMD Ryzen Balanced plan.  Click ok.  Haven't had a problem since.  I don't think this fix is limited to Ryzen since I've seen people doing this in forums several years now.  The other one that seems to make the rounds is disabling fast startup and seeing what happens.
