My first NAS server

So I'm looking into getting my own NAS server for the first time. I've looked up reviews on certain things and so far I'm considering Synology DS218play 16 TB 2 Bay for around 768.97 euros. I just want it to back to move all my music movies and tv shows over. I also have family photos and backups of my other family members' phones. I may also turn it into a plex server or something similar to plex. It's not like im short space on my PC but I think it would be better on an nas or external HDD. I did original look into a WD my elements 12tb for 250 but I kept seeing NAS stuff when looking you storage lol 

 

Any advice for someone just starting? Maybe something you wish you knew when first starting out or would you recommend something else.

For someone just starting, I would say start with using an older Windows machine as a NAS and playing with Windows, TrueNas and other systems.

 

I wouldn't spend all that money right off the bat, before I had an understanding of what I really wanted/needed.

 

But of course if you have the money to spend, do you.  

 

I'm running a Windows machine for my PLEX and file share and it does everything I need.
