Budget CPU

Well not just 1 thing is dying. Kinda everything is dying. Even if he had an intel system of that time I it would be really hard to find a replacement cause we live in Greece and the used market is almost non existant. Yes I agree with your reasoning but only if he were to upgrade something in 4-5 years which he most likely wont. And the budget is really streaching even for the extra 60$ for the mobo+cpu

If your budget cannot afford to move onto the LGA 1700 platform, then I think the 10105F makes sense. If you do, I'd ask that you get a B560, H570, Z490, or Z590 board, so your friend has the ability to do RAM overclocking (on H410, H510, B460, or H470, the RAM will be limited to DDR4-2666 speeds, even if the RAM is rated for a higher speed - this is a chipset limitation for those models). This will let you get the full potential out of the RAM you purchase.

And while the upgrade path isn't as strong, your friend still has the ability to double the core count with a 10700(F) or 11700(F) down the track if more performance is needed.

For a budget gaming build, is it worth going for the i3 12100f or the i3 10105f? My friend has a 1060 3gb so neither will bottleneck the system anyway.

The newer one is at 103$ and the older one is at 67$. Motherboard difference is higher as well. Socket 1700 mobos are much more expensive than the older socket. He is planning on keeping the system for a long time but he doesn't play the latest games neither he cares about insane performance hence the i3 CPU

***Important edit. He doesn't plan on upgrading that system cause he even had enough performance with an FX 6300. The only reason for buying the new PC is because that one is falling appart literally.***

12100f is significantly faster than the 10105f. It's worth the price. Plus if he ever want's to upgrade the GPU later there is less of a bottleneck than going with the 10105f.

If your friend would ever be willing to upgrade, getting a 12100F with a decent B660 board is a great value. The MSI Pro B660M-A goes for about $130, making the CPU+mobo cost about $240.

That is more than what you'd spend on the 10th gen chip, but in a few years, if your friend wants to upgrade, the options for LGA 1700 will be plentiful. He can probably drop in a 13700F for $300 or so, and get 12900K-like performance from a drop-in upgrade. Then, since the platform supports a Gen 5 x16 slot, he can upgrade to any future graphics card from the next 3 years and not be IO bottlenecked at all. Such a system upgrade would almost certainly be cheaper, while offering better performance, vs buying another i3-based 14100F or 15100F system in 2025.

Well my bad I forgot to include the edit part in at the start. I am new to forums so excuse the oversight but again the mobo extra cost is a lot for what he needs.

Well, the reason I recommended going for something that offers an upgrade path in the future is so that this doesn't happen again. If the FX-6300 had a better upgrade option than an FX-8350, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation - your friend could justify investing more into his current computer.

In fact, why are you two not willing to just fix up the current system if it meets his needs? Is a core component dying and it seems like it isn't worth investing more money into a dead platform?

I was leaning on the 10105f but I wanted to be sure. Thanks for the insight though I didn't know about the b560 being able to OC RAM
