I'm experiencing a strange issue with Windows 11 (build 22000.527) where some of my apps don't load properly (ex: Epic Games Launcher), and some don't function (Steam is able to download updates but not install/verify). Additionally, my Start menu wasn't loading at all. AIDA64 (which I use for a system monitor panel) froze. WIndows Update stalled on a security patch for about half an hour. I restarted Windows Explorer several times and it also restarted itself a few times. All of these issues started today after cold booting my PC (the power strip it's connected to was off as it always is every night). The same thing happened yesterday after starting from cold boot and a restart didn't fix anything, but full power off did. These issues persisted through reboots as well as a full power off. I tried to check Event Viewer but this did not load either. I rebooted in Safe Mode and ran sfc, dism, and check disk commands all of which reported no issues. I was also able to access Event Viewer here which spat out a bunch of errors (attached). I uninstalled the latest Windows update but there was no change.

Update: After letting my PC sit for a while in the OS, everything works fine now, so I'm not sure what's going on. I will add to this thread if I experience issues again. Any help would be appreciated!

Over at Elevenforums there is a consensus of thought that this is related to a Defender update gone awry. Some users have tried the following and report success, your mileage may vary though. I am running Win11 on supported system and have the update mentioned but have none of the issues.

Open an admin command then;

cd C:\Program Files\Windows Defender and "enter"
and then MpCmdRun.exe -resetplatform and "enter"
restart

Disable real time protection, then update
restart.

The restarts and the disabling of only real time protection in order are necessary steps.

This lines up with what I saw since the update that took half an hour was a Defender update. Everything seems to be fine now that the update is done but I'll try what you mentioned if I have issues again. Thank you!

It looks like MS pulled the update for a while, so hopefully it is fixed now, if you have issues again maybe the trick above will work to allow the fixed Defender update to be installed.
