We have the fiber one gig internet package, however our network has been unstable (dropping out, and speeds of 30mb Wired) for around 3 months, before we were getting speeds of 900mb up and down consistently. I assumed it was a faulty router (our old one, ASUS - RT-AC5300), so I purchased a new one (AX5400 Netgear nighthawk XR1000). Even with new router, new network names, passwords, and no devices connected to the network, we continue to get the terrible speed/performance. We get our full speed when we connect a PC directly to the modem. However, with the same wire our router loses all of its speed. And If we plug our PC into the router we continue to receive 30mb up and down.

Our ISP technician cannot figure out the problem, and provided us with a temporary ISP router. The router we were given performs good (600 up and down). However, the new router does not compare to our previous router's performance (when it worked).

Am I missing something? Two high quality differing brands of routers not functioning, but an ISP router will.

Assistance or Tech Tips would be appreciated!

Thanks everyone!

If I understand correctly:

  • you have a 'fiber to the home' connection
  • your internet package speed is 1Gb symmetrical (up and down)
  • connecting directly to the modem provides ~1Gb speeds
  • connecting a router directly to the modem, and a device directly to said router provides 30Mb speeds
  • the same wire used to connect directly to the modem is the same wire used to connect the router

Assuming all that is correct:

  • What has changed after the connection issues and slow speeds? You mentioned everything was working until approximately 3 months ago and the hardware is still the same.

Yes, everything you said is correct.

I am unaware of any changes to my hardware during that period of time. However, I just began to notice a decline in performance. When I performed the speed tests, it confirmed my feeling of slow internet, because of the 30mb up and down result.

I wanted to ensure there was no device on my network causing issues, so I removed every connected device. The slow speeds remained. Next, I tried a different (new) router same issues. I ensured the cables were cat6 and functioned properly.

If it works directly to the modem but not through a router in the middle, you only have 3 things it can be, the router, the 2 cables or the computer.

  • The router you have eliminated as you say you have the same issue with 2 different routers.
  • To eliminate the wired computer do you have any wifi devices that support wifi6?  Do a speed test on wifi while the computer is slow, is it also slow?  If not do you have any other wired computers to test with?
  • To eliminate the cables, swap them even if you think they are good..  Directly you are using 1 cable (Modem --> pc)  With the router you are using 2 cables (modem --> router --> pc)..   Swap them both out.

Yes I have a Wifi 6 enabled device. I have tested speeds on a wired connection to a desktop and wirelessly to a separate wifi6 laptop. The results are almost identical (40mb up and down, and 30mb up and down respectively).

I have also eliminated the possibility of faulty wires, as I have tested multiple cat6 cables. My desktop is able to get 700mb up and down when connected directly to the modem. However, it only gets the poor speed with the same cables when it is directly wired into the routers that i have tested.

That is so weird. But if there's anything I learned troubleshooting hardware and software issues is somethings things aren't logical. The only thing that does not make sense to me is why it suddenly stopped working as it should when nothing changed.

Unfortunately I'm out of ideas and knowledge, other than throwing money at it and trying other routers that may not solve this issue.
