Laptop to external monitor - Cable advice!

Steve1978

Hi,

I have just taken delivery of a Lenovo Legion 5, 82JY0019UK. Specs are 5800h with a 3070 GPU. I also have a Samsung Odyssey G7 32 inch monitor (240hz). The laptop has HDMI, USB C and normal USB B. The laptop is a 144Hz panel.

I would like to use the laptop plugged in to my monitor and take full advantage of the higher refresh rate whilst playing some games such as Warzone etc.

What cable do i need to buy in order to get the maximum performance? I will be gaming at 1440p on the monitor. So a 2k@240Hz conversion is whats needed. I believe that rules out HDMI straight away so will a USB C to DP cable work? will it have enough speed?

Thanks for your time

https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5-series/Legion-5-17-AMD/p/WMD00000421

lists the display port on the usb c port at DP1.2 which has a max of 17.28Gb/s vs HDMI2.0's 18Gb/s

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#1.2

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_2.0

You won't be able to drive a 1440p monitor at 240hz with either.

If I use words like probably or most likely, it is because I dislike certainty. These words can probably be omitted and the sentence read as a certainty.

Thanks for your reply, i didnt realise that the different USB c ports supported different versions of DP. good to know. I have just looked on the website of the company i bought the laptop from and in the image it says it does indeed have gen 2 usb c. see screen capture., so i think i should be good!

O, bought a standard USB C to DP cable for about £10 plugged it in and it works. 2 of the ports are Gen 2 and 1 is Gen 1! so all good. thanks.
