So I've collected some parts on the cheap to try build myself a NAS/file server. This is what I have so far:

cpu: amd athlon II x4 955

mobo: gigabyte ga-890xa-ud3

graphics: 8800gt - coz nostalgia

ram: 2x2gb 1333mhz ddr3

storage: 2x 2TB seagate barracuda, 250gb WD blue, 320gb WD scorpio blue (prolly not use)

The plan so far is to chuck it in a spare antec 1100 and plug it into modem/router (netgear dgnd4000), then simply have it running freeNAS with the barracudas in raid1 and the wd blue as boot.

This will be used for backups and media storage/playback although if my place gets fiber soon I might try host small minecraft servers to play with a few mates (maybe).

What are your thoughts and what would you change?

Don't exactly want to be spending big bucks on a massive array of drives or anything like that.

Thanks for any feedback.

personally, i would use a ssd as a boot drive, 60gb maybe? id then set what isnt in use as cache.. but yeah raid1 or 10 depending on how many drives you could get..
