I bought the Asus Z690-E board and it says "When M.2_1 is occupied with SSD device, PCIEX16(G5) will run x8 only"  WTH

The Asus Hero Z690 has 2 PCIe 5.0 lanes and it says When ROG Hyper M.2 card is installed on PCIEX16(G5)_1, PCIEX16(G5)_2 will run x8 only and if ROG Hyper M.2 card is installed on PCIEX16(G5)_2, PCIEX16(G5)_1 will run x8 only

Someone contacted Asus and they said "According to Asus tech support when I asked if I returned the Strix-E for a HERO would I still have an issue with x8, the support person said yes it will run at x8 if in the M.2_1 slot with a graphics card in the PCIEX(G5) or top slot"

I'm so confused, I don't have a ROG Hyper M.2 card, I have a Samsung 980 Pro which is PCIe 4.0. If I use the 980 Pro in the top M.2 slot, would it still make it x8? or would it only make the lower PCIe slot x8 and the top one for the GPU will remain x16?

If I'm reading the manual correctly, yes, if you install an M.2 drive in the top M.2 slot, the top x16 slot will run as x8. Also, the bottom 2 x16 slots are actually x4 electrically. They are only x16 in size. However, the bottom slot can run in a x4/x4 mode using the ROG Hyper M.2 card, which is apparently included with the board according to the package contents section.

Since I have a PCIE 4.0 SSD, If I install it in the bottom M.2 slot would the top PCIe 5.0 GPU slot remain x16?

Best as I can tell, the other M.2 slots on the board don't impact the top x16 slot, so it should be fine
