I have an aging low/ mid tier system that I built for cheap back in 2016, and I finally got around to buying a GPU upgrade (snagged a 1650S off ebay last night!).

The system is an overclocked AMD FX-8320 based system, currently with a GT 730, running on a 430W PSU: Corsair's CX430M.

The power supply calculator gives me a total estimated wattage of around ~350W for the upgraded system, so my current supply technically fits the bill, but

Given the above, I don't want to run my current supply anywhere close to full load with the new-to-me card, so I plan to replace it.

I started poking around (and parsed through the tier list), and I found the Tier A (assuming I'm reading it correctly) Corsair RM650, which is a really solid deal at $78 on Amazon.

I'm mainly asking just to get a sanity check– Is this a good PSU pick? 650W is a justified size for a ~350W load, right? Do you have a better recommendation?

RM650 is a great PSU, definitely overkill for your needs, but its a good option and will last a long time.

Given that 650W is pretty overkill, and has headroom even if I upgraded to something much more power hungry, dropping to a lower wattage to same some $$ seems reasonable. There doesn't appear to be a great reason to spend more on extra load capacity that isn't going to provide any real benefit.

Just found the SeaSonic CORE GX, which I think I might go with now. The 550W version is only $50 on Newegg atm, and has a MIR dropping it down to just $35... That seems pretty solid from here. It's a B on the tier list, and general sentiment about the Core lineup seems positive. The SeaSonic brand and 7-year warranty are positives too.

Newegg has some weird pricing going on with this PSU; the fully modular version has exactly the same $49.99 price tag as the semi, and the 500W modular is actually more expensive than the 550 for some reason. I think I might snag that while I have the chance.
