My brother has been experiencing some FPS drops since July and we haven't found the cause of the issue.

Some bulletpoints about the issue:

  • The issue occurs randomly in the games.
  • To fix it temporarly, it sometimes help restarting the computer. But even then it reoccurs after a while.
  • He doesn't get any error messages, besides the FPS drop the computer works completely fine.

Watch the video to see the issue, the video is slowed down to see it more clearly.

During the clip from CS:GO, you can see that the FPS counter drops for a split second, but not in Valorant.

During gameplay it just looks like the games are "skipping" frames.

It is very noticeable when gaming, even though the frame "skipping" is less than a second.

The FPS drops happen around 2,5, 26,5 and 38 seconds in the video.

The specs are:

  • WIndows 10 64-bit
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix Z490-E GAMING
  • BIOS version: 2301 (most recent one)
  • CPU: Intel i9 10900k (XMP enabled, around 60C during Heaven benchmark)
  • RAM: G-skill Trident Z 2x16GB 3200Mhz
  • Graphics card: ASUS ROG Strix 3080 OC (stock, around 75C during Heaven benchmark)
  • Driver: Nvidia 496.49 (most recent one)
  • SSD: Adata XPG SX8200 1TB M.2
  • PSU: Corsair HX850i, 850W Platinum
  • Monitor: Zowie BenQ XL2549k 240Hz
  • Mouse: Logitech Pro Wireless Superlight
  • Keyboard: Corsair K70 LP

Software in use when the FPS drop occurs:

  • Logitech G Hub
  • Corsair iCue
  • We have also tried closing all applications that aren't necessary to run the game(s), the issue still occurs.

Solutions we have tried so far:

  • Using an older, more "stable" graphics driver (466.77)
  • Setting the graphics driver to prefer "Performance"
  • Setting the power plan in Windows 10 to "Performance"
  • Reinstalling the game(s)
  • Reinstalling Windows 10
  • Turning off Windows 10 Game Mode
  • Adding games and applications to the firewall
  • Power Options - Advanced - Turn Hard Drive Off After: 0
  • Setting the mouse polling rate from 1000 to 500

What I would say might seem basic . But did u check cpu temperature. As from what you are saying iam getting the vibe of cpu thermal throttling . And what type of cpu cooler is your brother using.  So csgo is a cpu bound title as one of ( esports potato specs needed) as your brother build is high end . I would bet it would be pushing around 400+ frames .( same as my build although I got a 3080ti ) . Those frames will push cpu frequency up and cpu temp with it . Unlike riot game (valorant ) which is graphically more demanding and riot implements some sort of frame cap . Other than that I had a funny experience a couple of years ago with league of legends ( esports potato game ) that I had crazy frame drops like 8 frame / sec and I had been looking every where to find a reason as I had 800+ fps but felt like 10 found out that with that much frames my gpu and monitor (was a 100hz ) was out of sync and that's why it felt soo terrible. limiting cap to 240 fps fixed the issue.  But again  your problem more constantly with thermal throttling as u said when u restart (cpu cools down a bit ) your brothers pc works fine then after a while starts acting up again

Hi, sorry I forgot to mention but the temperatures are normal. CPU around 60C and GPU around 75C.

I'll give the FPS cap a try and see if it helps, thank you.
