Hello all! I am very very new to this forum so excuse me if this has been covered before somewhere else.

I currently have a surface laptop 3 that I want to upgrade the SSD. I'm having a bit of trouble finding the form factor but I was wondering if someone could let me know the difference between these two drives?

https://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-m2-pcie-nvme-class-35-2230-solid-state-drive-1tb/apd/ab673817/storage-drives-media

They seem so similar but there is next to no information about either of them on the website. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

different storage space, exactly the same in all other aspects I imagine

Trying to explain the cost difference between a small SSD and a large SSD isn't really that hard if you know a little about the idea/process of "supply and demand".  Given the difference in the cost of the two drives is just 85 dollars then people are more likely to just go ahead and spend the extra 85 bucks for a drive that is double in size than the other drive.  Knowing this, the folks at Dell figure it is more cost effective to make more of the expensive one than they are of the cheaper one.  It's more cost effective that way because the per-unit cost of manufacturing the drives is  hypothetically cheaper.  As they manufacture the drive, the more they produce of something (the drive), the per-unit cost goes down.  I am probably doing a really bad job of explaining this, not an easy subject to discuss thru the keyboard.

Anyway, for the difference of $85, go for the bigger drive.  It's cheaper than buying two of the smaller drives.

I can't figure out how more storage costs less money.. I feel like there has to be a catch somewhere like it's just dog slow or something.

oh i see what you mean, that is strange, on a quick glance i thought the 1tb was more expensive, no ssd will be 'dog' slow, so i 100% say go for the 1tb, good chance its the retailers error and you're getting a bargain, even if the 512gb does have better read and write speeds and etc, when it comes to ssd's the difference in load times will only be milliseconds

i thought the same, if you have a look again, the 1tb is the cheaper one, thats why he is confused

I did look.  I punched up tabs on both drives, how do you think I figured out the cost difference between the two drives was only $85??

Well I'm gonna pick it up and see what happens I guess! Thank you very much. I'll report back if they send me a sticker of an SSD on a hard drive 😛

now im confused, so you are aware that the 1tb $200 is $85 cheaper than the 512gb, not more expensive which is expected, hence why this guy made a post about it, im sure you opened up both tabs like i did and im guessing you made the same mistake as i did, thinking the 512gb was the cheaper drive, if im wrong i apologise

I dunno if anyone will see this but I just wanted to come back after receiving it. This is actually a pretty solid deal! For 200 bucks Canadian they actually ended up sending me a kioxia kbg40zns1t02 drive which is while not amazing is substantially better than I was expecting! If anyone is on the look out for a small drive I would definitely pick this up before they change their mind lol.
